Question 4

Question 4 – Who would be the audience for my media product?
For my Media filmproduct, I decided to focus on a particular audience demographic for my
film, as I felt that they would likely be best interested in the filmI produced. To do this I
used my genre research where I found the best audience for my film. Because of this, my
audience will be fans of the crime thriller genre – particularly males – of ages 15-30. In
terms of the ABC scale, my audience will likely be in the middle part of the scale as it fits in
with the social class of the main character, allowing them to understand the predicament
and situation the main character more than the other audiences I could have chosen from.
Furthermore, the target demographic would also earn a good enough pay with solid
intelligence meaning they would be able to decode clues and hints more than other
audiences which made them a better fit as it allowed me to present the type of filmthat I
wanted to.
As well as this, the reason why I decided to focus on a male orientated demographic is
because males are more interested in the films as they enjoy having the main character
being male and having a sense of authority and skill set as well as good intelligence as it
helps to provide them with an inspiring role model for them. Also, the film is more action
packed which suits the target demographic as it interests and intrigues them, which makes
them more nervous in the filmdue to the tension which the events provoke.
When looking through research of my target demographic, it was noticeable that they
tended to go for more popular films with explosion and comedy with 22 Jump Street being
the most popular film for my demographic with 68% of 15-30 year olds watching the film.
On the other hand, crime thrillers were not very popular for my target audience with no
crime thrillers appearing on the top 10 films watched. In order to ensure that I attracted
them to watch the film, I decided to make my main character be of a similar age to them, as
it allowed the main character to be more relatable to them, and thus gave me the
opportunity to be able to attract them to my film.
In terms of research into the social class of my film, it was apparent that audiences in the
middle class of the ABC scale were likely to watch crime thriller films more than the other
scales due to the high level of intelligence and the solid pay they earn, which matches the
main characters of crime thriller films – including my own – which have characters work in
more middle class roles. The evidence for this lies in the research which shows that 55% of
the AB demographic went to watch Mr Turner which is a crime thriller film, showing the
popularity which they create in my demographic, whereas, audiences in the C scale tend to
move away from crime thriller films, with no crime thriller films appearing on the list, thus
ensuring that my film is fitting to the right demographic.
Finally, in terms of gender, the research I put in seemed to suggest that crime thriller films
have the habit of attracting both male and females to their films. This is supported by the
fact that for both 12 Years a Slave and The Imitation Game, 51% of the audience were
males, and 49% of the audience females. This suggests that when my film is released, it may
attract both genders, instead of one which could be more of a benefit to my filmas it
