2. Head
• The top of the guitar
is called the head…
just like the top of you
is your head.
3. Tuning Pegs
• The TUNING PEGS
are used to tighten and
loosen the strings of the
guitar.
• They are OFF-LIMITS to
you…you will not be
turning or playing with
them. You will not be
allowed to play guitar if
you choose to mess with
the tuning pegs!
4. Nut
• The NUT is located
at the top of the
fingerboard. The nut
helps to space the
strings out and it
holds the strings up
off the fingerboard so
the strings can
vibrate.
5. Fingerboard
• The strings run from
the tuning pegs all the
way down the
FINGERBOARD. It is
called the
FINGERBOARD
because this is where
you use your fingers
to push on the strings
and change notes.
6. Frets
• The FRETS are the vertical (up and down) bars
on the fingerboard. You do NOT push the string
down on the fret…you push between them.
8. Sound Hole
• The SOUND HOLE is
what makes us be
able to hear the
strings. As the strings
vibrate, the sound
waves go into this
opening, bounce
around (getting
louder), and exit (now
being able to be
heard.
9. Bridge
• The BRIDGE is the
piece that connects
the strings to the body
of the guitar.
10. Let’s Review
• Make sure you fill out
your study guide so you
can use it to study for
your quiz. You will take
your guitar parts quiz
during your NEXT music
class.

This gets snickers-the boys find “nut” funny. I show them my hand with my fingers close together. The nut’s purpose is to space the string out (spread your fingers out) so that you can play the strings one at a time.
Same job as the nut except this is at the bottom of the guitar.
Use the guitar to point to the parts. Ask: What is the top of the guitar called? Head What is the wood part of the guitar? Body Which part is off limits to you? Tuning pegs What is the opening in the guitar body called? Sound Hole What is the plastic piece at the top that holds the strings apart? Nit What is the long skinny part where you push down called? Fingerboard What do you call the metal pieces that go across the finger board? Frets What is the plastic piece at the bottom of the guitar that separates the strings called? Bridge
You will want to open this link and have it loading (while on pause) while you do the powerpoint. The video can take some time to load so it helps if you open the link and get it loading before you want it to actually work. If you are going to show the electric guitar or the strings video you will want to open those in separate windows and let them load as well.
