The passageways of Paris are covered walkways that house boutiques, galleries, and other shops. There are approximately 20 passageways still in existence today, dating back to between 1823 to 1847. They provide shelter from traffic and weather, and each has its own unique atmosphere and history. The passageways offer an inviting space for strolling and exploring lesser known areas of the city.

current location.
Jouffroy, built in 1847, is one of the city’s
younger passageways and is named for its
architect M. Jouffroy, the son of the Marquis
Jouffroy d’Abbans. Heated from the ground,
it was a favourite promenade, away from the
legendary Parisian dampness. The gallery’s
toy, gift and book shops seem to reach out
from another time like when the passageway’s
underground played host to a ballroom, which
then became a puppet theatre and in 1860 the
Séraphine, a shadow play puppetry theatre,
whose “actors” were 60 centimetres high.
Over at number 30 is a cosy tea salon, Le
Valentin, serving homemade lemonade, cakes,
jams and candies and fabulous photographs
can be found at number 45 at Photo Verdeau.
And don’t miss the family-style Hôtel Chopin at
number 46 with its big, heavy rooms keys and
potted plants.
And for a dose of the incognito, you can duck
out the Passage Jouffroy the back way and head
into the Passage Verdeau across the street to
embark on your own new adventure.

14 WHERE PARIS I FEBRUARY 2014
[ F E B R U A R Y I N P A R I S ]
BY SANDRA ISKANDER
What originally began as a school project has now become an
A-list must-have accessory. RedLine jewellery designer Laetitia
Cohen-Skalli first launched the brand as part of her Master’s
project where she was to create and market a brand. With
a remarkably positive reception to her fictitious collection,
Laetitia decided to launch RedLine in the real world.
Inspired by the belief that a red string protects and brings
luck to its wearers, Laetitia decided to create her jewellery line
around the now famous red string, and smartly just added
a diamond to bring it to life. Each bracelet’s clasp is also
engraved with the letters KA, representing Ancient Egypt’s
belief that the letter K brings peacefulness, serenity,
calmness and harmony. And so Laetitia’s success came
with chic simplicity, adorning wrists with not only a
pretty bracelet but also bringing luck to her clients.
The RedLine bracelet has now become a cult
accessory with people from around the
world, including Hollywood celebrities,
making appointments at Laetitia’s atelier in the heart of Paris to
personalise their red string. With the good luck high-end bracelet’s
unique feature being the strength of the string itself, being very
resistant and almost unbreakable, a RedLine bracelet makes for a
perfect piece of jewellery to wear all the time, making it a piece of
yourself.
Made by hand in the rue Saint-Honoré atelier, each bracelet is
created with care and attention, and can be designed with more
than one diamond or even different stones. And now you can even
choose different coloured strings to suit your personal style and
your mood. Expanding the jewellery line, the talented designer
now also offers her clients gold bracelets, rings, a men’s line as
well as a sweet collection for children, and always designing
around the idea of spirituality and harmony.

RedLine jewellery is also available at Printemps

brings her clients luck, like to go in Paris?

British perfume house Penhaligon’s has recently opened its second Parisian
boutique in the heart of the French capital in the Marais neighbourhood.
The boutique, designed by London designer Christopher Jenner, features
a modern décor with subtle old British touches throughout, including the

detailing, while the ceiling is inspired by that of Westminster Abbey. The
boutique, which is opened daily from 10.30am to 7.30pm, offers the house’s
collection of perfumes for both him and her, including Blenheim Bouquet,
with notes of citrus oils and spices for her, while gentlemen can cast a spell
with LP No. 9 For Men with its complex heart of ylang-ylang.
