isn’t in his studio, he is on the road, attending Milan Fashion Week to show his menswear
collection, jetting to LA for the John Varvatos Stuart House Benefit and traversing the globe in
search of inspiration and sites for his retail empire. Once an over-packer, frequent flyer Varvatos
is now a lean, list-making machine who simplifies without missing a sartorial beat. The Detroit
native travels with equal parts elegance (his method for packing a suit is, in a word, genius) and
attitude (he never leaves home without leather boots.) Trust the man who outfits rock legends

How has travel influenced your
work as a designer?
Travel is the only time I’m not
in meetings, and I have time to
think. So, when I’m travelling, I’m
watching people in the street.
I’m going to flea markets, art
galleries, vintage clothing stores,
and bookstores, and looking
at architecture and details on
buildings and cars.
If you could wake up anywhere
tomorrow, where would that be?
I love Paris. I love London. I love
Tokyo. I love Florence, [but] my
getaway [has to be] the island of
Mustique. It’s small, private and
there isn’t much to do. It’s a place
I go to shut out everything except
my family and friends I’m with. My
wife and I eloped there, and we
go pretty much once a year. It’s a
magical place.
What’s your idea of the perfect
travel outfit?
A great looking dress shirt you
can take from a business meeting
and later on wear with a t-shirt and
jeans. You can never go wrong with
a great pair of dark jeans and boots.
I’m not talking about Western
boots. Our boots are Old World,
they have an elegance to them and
a worn-in look. If I have those core
pieces, I can get through anything.
What do you always have with
you on a flight?
A light scarf on the plane, it keeps
you warm, and if it’s made of cotton
or silk, you can wear it to dinner as a
tie. And my iPad, I call it my life.
Any tips for packing light?
Think about versatile items that can
go from day to night, so that they
can be both casually elegant and
elegant. Less is more in a way.
I travel weeks on end, and I used
to be an over-packer, but I travel
better when [my packing list] is
concise. It’s a thought process.
What are the things you’re going to
be doing? Are you going to be out
in the evenings? Are you going to
business meetings? Make a list and
pack what you need.
Do you have a foolproof look for
business meetings?
I can get away with more, since I’m
a designer. I show up at a meeting
wearing a leather jacket and it
works. If you’re in the corporate
world, you need a great-fitting
suit no matter your size or weight.
It’s not about the price. It’s about
great tailoring. You automatically
look more powerful when you
have things that fit well. Even if
you’re bigger, anything that gives
you shape is better.
What’s the most effective
method for packing a suit?
I struggle with it from time to
time, depending on the fabrics.
If you get off a plane and have to
go to a meeting without having
a chance to get it pressed, travel
with a light garment bag you can
put overhead or hang up. If you’re
bringing more than one suit, use a
larger rectangular suitcase. If you
flat fold the jacket on a table with
tissue in between the folds and
across the sleeves, you can pull
it out of your suitcase, hang it up
and wear it immediately.
What kind of gent do you
design for?
Of course we love artists,
photographers and musicians, but
it’s just someone with a creative
bone, who has an affinity for details,
whether it’s electronics, cars or their
clothes. He has an appreciation for
fine things and he’s more concerned
about style than fashion.
What does the suit look like
this fall?
It’s Cary Grant. [The silhouette] has
more suppression at the waist. The
shoulders are slightly sharper, not
as rounded. That strength in the
shoulder gives an old-Hollywood
elegance and a more powerful look.
We’re still in shorter-suit mode, but
lengths are getting slightly longer.
When you go hourglass, you have
to go longer otherwise it makes you
look hippy, even if you’re skinny.
What are the easiest updates to
make this season?
A new suit we just talked about,
preferably in midnight. It’s very
chic, even in tuxedos. We’re also
in a moment where it’s all about
the jacket. It’s a tailored piece not
outerwear. You can dress it up, dress
it down and turn the collar up.
What are your favorite tunes on
the road?
Everyone thinks about me as
rock ’n’ roll, but I’m actually a big
jazz and blues fan. Right now I’ve
been listening to the new David
Bowie album “The Next Day”,
Boz Scaggs’s “Memphis”, Johnny
Marr’s new “Messenger” and Gary
Clark Jr.’s first solo album. Music is
something I really enjoy, and it’s
also a big stimulus. Depending on
the energy I need, if I want to be
laid back, I could be listening to
jazz or blues. If I’m designing or
sketching, I’m usually listening to
rock ’n’ roll.
You were a mentor on NBC’s
“Fashion Star”. What was the
most thrilling part about being
a TV personality? The thought
of doing TV was daunting, but the
reality is that it’s very much what I
do every day. The difference is [on
TV], the designers don’t have to
listen to me. Here [at my studio],
they have to listen to me. It was also
fun working with [co-judges] Nicole
Richie and Jessica Simpson and our
host, Louise Roe. We’re all really close
friends and laughed a lot. It was
almost melancholy when we’d finish
shooting.
You debuted your line in 2000
and have grown your company
to a global brand. What’s next?
We’ll be opening in London,
Bangkok and Singapore in spring
2014. I have a car coming out
with Chrysler. I’m thinking of
the possibility of doing a home
collection. And we continue to do
everything better, keep the bar
raised high and never take our eye
off what has gotten us here.

fashion label, with his latest
collection hitting the runways
during the last Fashion Week in
Paris. Where sat with the self-
proclaimed perfectionist to talk
about his inspirations and the
fashion capital.

Made up of 18 pieces, his latest collection
is “very graphic and graceful in the
movement, it is about softness and calmness”,
explains the young Colombian designer.
Focused more than ever on creating pieces
that his clients can purchase the moment they
are shown on the runway, Esteban shows two
small capsule collections per year. He does
not create Spring/Summer or Autumn/Winter
collections but creates rather, as he describes
it, “more [of] an eternal collection. It all started
with net-a-porter having worldwide exclusivity
of the collection online and now Maria Luisa
is the first one to have the collection offline
in Paris, and we always thought of a woman
who is all over the world, not just in Paris, in
Hong Kong, in New York. And right now it’s
winter somewhere and summer somewhere
I love to have lunch at Le Marché des
Enfants Rouges. It’s my favourite!

I love the Marais in general, it is so much
fun. I love Place des Vosges and

Sometimes I just go for the view and just
sit there and take in the city because it’s
so beautiful.

loves about Paris…
else so it’s not about spring, summer, autumn
or winter, it’s about pieces that work all year
round and can be trans-seasonal. The idea
is what you see on the runway is already in
the store to buy, you don’t have to wait for 6
months, it used to work but now I don’t think
it does, with certain websites you see things
immediately so by the time they are in stores
it feels old.”
His latest collection, as he explains, is an
“exploration of angles and curves and lines of
the body. When I started to sketch I started to
see that the pieces reminded me of a stingray
in the water so I wanted to have something
that would explain that thought process. For
me it’s all about continuation, it’s all about
building a language it’s not about going from
one place to the next.”

This month the worlds of fashion and art collide bringing us iconic little black
dresses, taking us backstage to fabulous fashion shows and showing us Yves Saint
Laurent’s desk.
The Mona Bismarck American Center for Art
and Culture is hosting the Little Black Dress
exhibition, which is organised by the Savannah
College of Art and Design Museum of Art and
beautifully curated by Vogue editor at large
André Léon Talley. Through to September 22
you can discover the wardrobe staple as seen
through the eyes of different fashion houses.
Over fifty dresses are on show, including elegant
pieces from Chanel, Tom Ford and Oscar de
la Renta, including some previously worn by
a few of the biggest and stylish stars in the
world including fashion favourite Sarah Jessica
Parker and songstress Rihanna. With the exhibit
showing dresses from different decades it is
interesting to see just how classic the little black
dress really is.

In the 80s, Gérard Musy was one of the first
fashion photographers to head backstage
during the fashion shows and click away,
capturing the models as they got their final
touches before hitting the catwalks. Now the
Galerie des Nouvelles Images at the Hotel
Scribe is giving you a peak at this mythical
world of fashion and glamour. From the 19th
of September through to the 7th of November,
the intimate hotel gallery is hosting Back to
Backstage, an exhibit showcasing twenty black
and white photographs taken by the talented
Musy, featuring photos taken backstage at,
among others, Thierry Mugler, Yves Saint
Laurent and Azzedine Alaïa shows.

looking for”, she explains.
It’s a delicate balance between what sparkles
and the original, the extravagant, the
unusual, the singular, an exercise in styles
that Olwen Forest masters beautifully.
For her latest exhibition, fittingly entitled
Jewels of the Jet Set, she has drawn from
her bottomless trunks of treasures to bring
together a sublime selection of creations
designed by Joseff of Hollywood, Elsa
Schiaparelli, Coco Chanel, Hattie Carnegie
and Kenneth Jay Lane. These were the
designers of the golden age of Hollywood
but as well of the prominent and fashionable
galas from the 1920s to the dawn of the
1970s. Jewellery dreamt up by Joseff
was worn by the likes of Greta
Garbo, Liz Taylor, Grace Kelly,
Marilyn Monroe, Douglas
Fairbanks Jr.
and Tony
Curtis, both
on and off the
set.
The avant-garde jewels are
fabulous objects, inspired by
the moon, the sun and the stars.
The Sun God brooch, for example,
was created by Joseff for the
personal wardrobe of the actress
Pier Angeli.
The audacity of Elsa Schiaparelli is there,
too. The designer who worked with Dali and
Cocteau encrusted giant crystals, baptised
shocking pink, into her famous jewels that
remain both surrealist and luminous. Roger
Jean-Pierre, famous for his couture creations
for Schiaparelli, Dior and Balenciaga, is
represented in the exhibition with his jewel
sculptures that were adored by the stars to
the end of the 1960s.
And the inimitable world of Coco Chanel
is on hand, too. In the middle of the 1920s,
the great designer began combining her
purely classical clothes with her own line
of jewellery developed with the complicity
of the Count Etienne de Beaumont, known
for his sumptuous masked balls. The duo
brought out a collection in crystal and
coloured enamel fashioned by the
internationally known
house of Gripoix.

When fall comes to Paris the art world flourishes with an
extensive array of events and exhibitions. Cutting edge Italian
design, dream-filled interior décors in a 17th century mansion,
intriguing tribal art and the perfect portraits of Bert Stern are all
on the agenda.
A stunning 17th century Parisian mansion on the banks of the
Seine has been metamorphosed by 15 internationally acclaimed
decorators, architects and designers who have imparted upon it their
individual contemporary visions of a private home. The journey into
the mansion includes, among others, a room for lunch on the grass
complete with a lawn, a white tent and a chandelier of butterflies, a
music room replete with a Pleyel piano and a bedroom of black, gold
and whimsical patterns fit for a little prince. The show, organised by
AD Intérieurs, being held for the 4th time, presents contemporary
spaces adapted to a contemporary lifestyle for which the decorators
drew on dreamlike, surrealistic and poetic references to imagine
their tableau-like settings. Bruno Moinard took his inspiration from
Ovid’s Metamorphoses to create his mythological dining room where
shadows move through backlit perforated metal while Maria Pergay
has created an enchanted office for Fendi with an airy atmosphere
showcasing her emblematic pieces like the flying carpet bed. Even
the garden of the home has also been given an ephemeral new
liveable look for the duration of the exhibition.

Galerie de l’Instant
is paying tribute to
Stern, one of the
very great portrait
artists and fashion
photographers, in an
exhibition entitled
Bert Stern – Portraits and Stories. The show puts the spotlight on the
body of his work with images from the beginning of the 1960s through
to the Kate Moss shoot for Vogue. The photographs embody, perfectly,
the glamour of their subjects among them Elizabeth Taylor and Richard
Burton, Audrey Hepburn, Alain Delon and Catherine Deneuve, Twiggy
and Madonna.

Into the
TRIBAL
A sculptural coffee table, a gilded copper
armchair and a highly graphic ensemble of
wood and mosaic are among the exceptional
pieces of contemporary Italian design being
exhibited at the Galerie Maeght. Beauty will
save the world, wrote Dostoyevsky, and that
is the guiding principle behind the GoriLab,
a hotbed for design ideas that puts forth
works by artists, designers and architects who
create in total liberty. Collectors Fabio and Paolo Gori and art publishers Stefania
and Flavio Pannocchia decided to bring together their know-how and love of art to give rise
to a studio producing objets d’art, ceramics, furnishings and jewellery in limited editions.
The Left Bank gallery is presenting the creations emanating from the GoriLab studio for the
first time in Paris with 14 pieces from Alessandro Mendini, Massimilano and Doriana Fuksas,
Mimmo Paladino and Sandro Chia, all leading artists on the contemporary Italian design
scene.

Objects that heal, masterpieces from the

the outstanding art works converging on the Left

carefully selected galleries from around the world
and are hosted in art galleries throughout the
Beaux-Arts quarter of the Saint-Germain-des-Prés

tradition holds that the first
stone of the cathedral of
Notre-Dame was laid in 1163
and so this year the glorious
gothic structure is celebrating
its 850th anniversary offering
a fine occasion to explore
medieval paris. it was an age
in which the city was peopled
by, among others, cathedral
builders, alchemists, scholars,
craftsmen and farmers.
For the 850th anniversary of the Cathedral of
Notre-Dame, its crypt is currently hosting a
fascinating exhibition entitled Paris disparu/
Paris restitué (Paris Gone, Paris Restored),
which puts the spotlight on the urban story
of Paris and how it looked from the time of
Lutèce to the 19th century with a section on
the Middle Ages. The visitor can take a close
look at what Paris looked like during the
various stages in its history notably through
vestiges found in the crypt and astounding
3D scale interactive experiences developed
by Dassault Systèmes.
A fine glimpse into the medieval lifestyle
is also found at the Musée de Cluny, which
is devoted to medieval civilisation and
possesses an impressive collection of
arts and objects of the Middle Ages. The
tapestries, fabrics, illuminated manuscripts,
stained glass and gold and silver works
underscore the refinement of the medieval
world. The museum is housed in one of the
finest examples of medieval architecture
remaining in Paris and is bordered by a
splendid medieval-inspired garden, which
includes medicinal and aromatic plants used
in the Middle Ages.
Feasting and merrymaking, too, were
key elements in the medieval lifestyle
when life itself was so precarious. Jousts,
tournaments, dancing and open-air theatre
were all part of the holiday plan. Those
Middle Age parties are in the forefront of
an exhibition entitled La Fête au Moyen
Age, being held in the Tour Jean sans Peur,
a medieval tower dating from the 15th
century found right in the heart of Paris.
Meanwhile, the Tour Saint-Jacques, a 16th
century bell tower from the late Middle Ages
has opened to the public for the first time
this year.
And an exhibition at the Musée de la Franc-
Maçonnerie (The Museum of Freemasonry)
entitled The Rule and the Compass, is devoted
to tools and publications used by cathedral
and other builders over the centuries. The
exhibition takes a look at how in the 17th
century Freemasons adapted their symbolic
language from the architectural philosophy
and thinking of the builder masons of among
other ages, the Middle Ages.

Medieval feasts bring to mind
banquet halls laden with
quantities of fragrant food
and drink. While the general
population enjoyed simple
feasts of lamb or crepes, the
medieval art of feast making
reached a certain perfection at
royal banquets when noble
hosts would have a giant terrine
baked from which flying birds
or a peacock would emerge.
Monks also played a key role on the medieval
cuisine front raising fresh water fish in ponds,
brewing beer and growing crops. While beer
and wine, usually served hot and spiced,
flowed freely, one of the trendiest beverages
in the Middle Ages was hippocras, a red or
white wine-based drink flavoured with fruits
and spices and served chilled.
For a more precise insight into what people
were eating some 600 years ago, the
great 14th century French chef Guillaume
Tirel, known as Taillevent, left behind
his Le Viandier, a record of the cuisine of
the period and his own recipes, some of
which can be quite easily prepared today
like watercress soup or pears in wine. In
his Viandier, this one time master of the
king’s kitchen details all of the foodstuffs,
not just meats, of the time. Spicy sauces,
predominantly of saffron, ginger, pepper
and cinnamon, were used for preparing
meats and fish while spices, nuts and
fruits, fresh or dried, were used liberally
for flavourings. Fruits were clearly in
favour, fresh and in sauces, apples, pears,
peaches while plums were among the
fruits of predilection (12 varieties are still
cultivated in France today) with Taillevent
even mentioning a recipe for eel with
prunes. Grains and breads were also widely
consumed as well as brioche, a richer take
on bread, which appeared in or around the
14th century. And among the more unusual
table offerings were swans and herons.
Taillevent still remains a mythical name as
that of the great chef as well as that of the
landmark restaurant, Le Taillevent, which
perpetuates the tradition of incarnating
French gastronomy. Fittingly, one of the
restaurant’s emblematic dishes, created by
chef Alain Solivérès, is risotto of spelt wheat,
bringing back to grand cuisine a vintage
grain (spelt wheat was a commonly used
grain in medieval cooking) that had been all
but forgotten.
