1. UNIT 57: PHOTOGRAPHY AND
PHOTOGRAPHIC PRACTISE
PROJECT PROPOSAL
(P2, P3, M2, M3)
Candidate name: Cesca Haig
2. We will be going to Salford Quays on
November 19th to take pictures of the
urban landscape around the area. I will
be producing about 35-40 pictures of the
buildings and sights around Salford
Quays, from these I will pick my final 10
images.
3.
4. REASONS FOR SELECTION OF THEME (INCLUDING
INSPIRATION FROM THE WORK OF OTHERS)
I am taking these images because I want to capture all the
different textures of the urban landscape, for example the water
and reflections from the buildings around in it. Also the all the
interesting buildings around Salford Quays, because they’re not all
the typical straight up, straight down build.
My theme will be black and white photography as I think that
captures the eye of the viewer, as it makes them pay more
attention to the details of the things in the image.
5. Two photographers whose work I have been inspired by are Ansel Adams and
Eugène Atget, they both worked with black and white photography and both
were landscape photographers. Although Ansel Adams worked a lot with rural
landscape I can still use his work as inspiration with the way he uses water in his
images to show the reflection of the things he is photographing. Eugene Atget
has also worked in this way, but he used more buildings and was a more urban
landscape photographer. His work is based around the streets of Paris, he didn’t
use many techniques but instead used the textures of the things he was
photographing, which is what I am hoping to do with my work.
6. A third photographer I am using as inspiration is Iain Hutchinson, he is
more modern urban landscape photographer although he still works
in black and white.
I have put a few examples of his work here to show the way he uses
different techniques, as with the other two photographers I have used
he has used the reflection from the water in his one of his images.
7. In my work I will use different techniques, such as depth of field, rule of thirds and
Macro.
I want to use depth of field in my photography because I like the way that it
makes the viewer have to focus more on the photo to try and see what is out of
focus either in the background or at the foreground.
I think that using rule of thirds will make my compositions more interesting, I will
make my view lines more off center and consider skylines in my photography to
make my images more dramatic.
As I have decided that I want to use the textures of the buildings and surfaces
around Salford Quays I will use macro photography to capture close ups of
different surfaces, as this will enable me to show the smaller details better.
8. We will be visiting Salford Quays on
the November 19th 9.30-12.30
Salford Quays is Greater
Manchester’s unique waterfront
destination.
