5. There is no available tornado-safe shelter for the 1,669 students, staff, faculty, residents, and business workers that are within a five minute radius of this location. This project will provide the needed shelter 24-7 and mitigate injury and loss of life in the event of a tornado by providing accessibility to a shelter.

6. Promote Student Engagement through Extra-Curricular Activities

7. Through massive amounts of national research over an extended period of time, we know that students who are engaged in extracurricular activities are significantly more likely to succeed academically than those who simply commute to campus. Because of this, Missouri State University-West Plains has dreamed for years of providing a more complete collegiate experience for students by constructing a multi-purpose facility. In fact, a multi-purpose facility has been included in both the Master Plan Visioning Guide and Long Range Plan for years. The proposed shelter would accomplish much of what has been envisioned for students by providing multiple indoor recreational opportunities in the heart of the campus.
