3. What is LNG?
• The LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) is a fluid in the liquid state, colorless, odorless,
composed primarily of methane, contains small amounts of ethane, propane,
nitrogen and other components normally present in natural gas. It does not contain
carbon dioxide and water.
• Being primarly composed of methane (CH4), its combustion (+air O2) brings
almost only carbon bioxide (CO2) and water (H2O)=> hence it is a very clean
fuel.
• At atmospheric pressure, methane becomes liquid at about -160°C.
• LNG takes up about 1/600th the volume of natural gas in the gaseous state:
• It can be thus easily transported by ship in large quantities;
• The amount of energy stored for the same volume is almost 3 times larger than
with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG at 200bar).

5. LNG vs pipelines
•The LNG represents an alternative way to the transport by pipeline of the natural
gas, allowing a direct connection between the regions of production and of
consumption where connection by pipeline is not possible.
•The use of LNG responds to the strategic need to diversify geographically the
sources of supply and make the natural gas market truly global and not limited
geographically.

•On the demand side, 7 importing countries out of a total of 26 (Japan, South Korea, China,
India, Taiwan, Spain, UK) attracted 81% of the total LNG volumes.
•Japan and South Korea’s combined share was around 53%.
•Demand side is almost entirely directed toward production of compressed natural gas; very
little quantity is used directly for transportation (ship, truck or rail) as LNG – data is not
available.

L’Italia è all’avanguardia in
queste ultime tecnologie.
Discorso a parte è l’utilizzo in celle a combustibile.

Viking Lady
The FellowSHIP project was initiated with the goal of developing and demonstrating maritime fuel cell power packs with an electric
power output of 320kW. This goal was completed by FellowSHIP phase II in 2010, successfully operating a 330kW fuel cell for more
than 7000 hours onboard Viking Lady. A continuation of the project was started in 2011 to demonstrate how batteries can be integrated
to further optimize energy consumption on Viking Lady.
The battery pack that will be installed on Viking Lady is a 500 kWh demonstration pack capable of producing 5 MW over short periods of
time. A full scale hybrid installation would be expected to include a 2-3 MWh battery pack, but the 500 kWh pack is sufficient to
demonstrate the technology.

Rotterdam, 10 July 2013
The introduction of LNG (liquefied natural gas) as an alternative, cleaner fuel for road transport, inland waterway transport and coastal
shipping is expected to bring an extra 2.7 billion euros in economic growth and 8,000 man years between now and 2030, in the
Netherlands. The development of LNG is therefore of strategic importance to the Dutch transport sector. It offers the Netherlands
opportunities to reinforce its gas hub position and to boost investments and create new jobs.
These are the conclusions of a survey that was conducted by PwC on the instructions of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, as part of the
‘Rhine and Wadden Green Deal’. The Green Deal involves a partnership between the government and business as well as research and
educational institutes, aiming to promote green growth. Today, the National LNG Platform evaluated the results and presented new
initiatives. One year after the start of the Green Deal, the new LNG chain is up and running:
•7 LNG fuelling stations are operational.
•100 LNG trucks are on the road.
•2 LNG inland vessels are in service.
•1 small-scale LNG tanker ship is in service.
•A bunkering station for ships is operational.
•Rotterdam is the first European port to introduce LNG legislation

70. LNG in campo ferroviario

navale, ferroviario);
Sardegna (1,6 Mio abitanti),…;
•Il GNL è un carburante/combustibile molto più “pulito” degli altri idrocarburi;
•Terminal internazionali di ricezione dai paesi produttori (con funzionalità anche di rigassificazione per il GNC);
Nel rispetto della concorrenza, lo Stato deve promuovere lo sviluppo della filiera del GNL nei trasporti;
