The oldest wall paintings (20,000 to 500,000 years old) in India
can be found in the caves of Bhimbetka depicting animals,
symbols, and scenes of daily life in natural pigments of white,
red and black. Gond paintings done on village mud walls use
colors derived from charcoal, colored soil, plant sap, leaves,
and cow dung and can last up to 20 years. The speciality of
Gond panting is the simplicity of the ideas and their
representation of the day-to-day life of rural people. Today,
paintings for sale are usually done on canvas and paper,
Craftmark has outlined the Gond painting process on canvas
and paper here.
12. Location of tribes
Gond is the largest tribe in India with a population of
about 7.4 million and inhabits
several states like Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh,
Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, etc.
These people are the original inhabitants of central
India and have a glorious history of empires and
victories. They also have a very rich
culture replete with tribal traditions
13. Motifs
Painted motifs portray folk and puranic deities, birds, animals, fish, trees or simply
an event of a day to day life. Very colourful and descriptive this art has its own
charm. Common Themes of Tribal Paintings
The tribal households are decorated with paintings as the people invest their spare
time
in such creative activities and hobbies. They are also a part of religious festivities
and
social events like marriages and so forth. Many a time the paintings symbolize
supernatural entities and deities in the form of trees and animals. The common
themes
for tribal paintings are: Mythological stories depicted in epics like the Ramayana or
Mahabharata, nature in the form of forests, agricultural fields, domestic as well as
wild
animals and some significant events in the life of the painter like marriage, a certain
festival or death, etc.
18. CHANGES IN RECENT YEAR IN
GOND PAINT ING
Changes in the Recent Years The major change that has
occurred is that earlier the paintings used to be made only on
the walls of houses and therefore they were not saleable. At
the most, an art collector could take their photograph to use as
an exhibit. Now due to the introduction of canvas and chart
paper as well as acrylic colors, these paintings can be sold and
transported to the buyer's address.
The demand for these paintings is on the rise and this is
evident from the fact that every year a few more rural artisans
join those based in cities like Bhopal, creating the paintings on
canvas and chart paper.
19. LIMITED MARKETING OF
PRODUCT
Marketing
Tribal paintings on canvas and chart paper are
ordered and purchased by various emporiums
and handicraft export houses in Bhopal, Delhi
and Mumbai. The artists do not sell their
paintings directly to the end customers.
20. LIMITED VISIBILITY OF
PAINTING
Though these paintings are in demand but still
it is seen only in the art emporiums,
exhibitions and are only used as decorative
pieces in homes and offices as tribal paintings
provide an ethnic, traditional and aesthetic
view of the remote tribal village life .
