7. Expert Opinion
7.1 SIRANE, Simon Balderson
Visiongain sought opinion of Simon Balderson, Managing Director of SIRANE - a premier
packaging solutions company founded in 2003. SIRANE is an NPD and process development
company with full manufacturing capabilities covering the food, medical, horticultural and industrial
business sectors. The company has a large distribution network across the world. We interviewed
Mr. Balderson in June 2013 and would like to thank him for his time.

7.1.1 Trends and Developments
Visiongain: What are the global trends and developments in the MAP market compared to UK?

Simon Balderson: UK MAP market’s growth is slower now, because MAP is already mature here,
but globally, esp. in Americas or Southern Europe, (where it’s a new industry still) MAP market has
got a long way to go. In developing countries it is a new industry that it’s offering new options, like
ESL (Extended Shelf Life), which means you can distribute further on. It is a growth industry
globally; it’s not so much a growth industry in the UK. The growth depends entirely on the market:
there is a significant speed of growth in countries, like Turkey, Brazil, or Mexico.

7.1.2 Challenges and Opportunities
Visiongain: What challenges and opportunities are there in MAP market?

Simon Balderson: One of the big challenges in MAP is to have a very good temperature control.
South Africa is quite a good example: MAP is good in SA, but the cold chain is not very good. So,
MAP is a waste of money if the cold chain does not work. MAP only really works properly with
good temperature control. Challenge really is to match growth and introduction of MAP with the
implementation of better temperature control, in terms of warehousing, transport and so on. The
same in Turkey: Turkey has an interest in MAP, but some distances are quite long and the cold
chain is ineffective. If you have to ship from Eastern Turkey to the sea, you still aren’t going to get
good results, because of the cold chain. The big challenge is really linking MAP with the
distribution network and the temperature control. That’s the big challenge. The big opportunity, of
course, is the growth thing we talked about. There is a massive opportunity in MAP right across the
world, if this challenge of getting the cold chains and distribution network sorted out. It’s a big
infrastructure requirement, really. Of course infrastructure takes money, time, investment and
education. It’s quite a big challenge, but it’s a very big opportunity in the same way. The challenge
is basically to educate people how to do it and how MAP works.

8.1 Air Products PLC
Air Products PLC operates in the industrial, energy, healthcare and technology sectors with a
portfolio of atmospheric gases, process and specialty gases, performance materials, and
equipment and services. The company had more than 21.300 employees around the world as of
September 2013 and operations in more than 50 countries. The Chairman, President and CEO is
John E. McGlade. As of 2012, sales of $9.6bn were recorded, with total equity of $6.6bn. Air
Products was established in Detroit, Michigan in 1940 by Leonard Parker Pool and was based on
the idea of producing and selling industrial gases. The company’s USP was a reduction in
distribution costs by building the gas generating facilities adjacent to large volume users.

On March 19 2012, the company announced the acquisition of UK based CryoService Limited
which would subsequently be known as Air Products CryoEase Services. This is the third
acquisition between the two firms with the first occurring in 1998 when Air Products purchased a
25% stake in CryoService. The company then acquired a majority shareholding in CryoService in
2008. CryoEase Services will offer operational and cost advantages to Air Products.

In 2013, Air Products acquired EPCO Carbon Dioxide Products, Inc., a privately-held producer and
marketer of liquid carbon dioxide (CO2) headquartered in Monroe, Louisiana. The acquisition also
included Louisiana Leasing, Ltd. of Illinois, an affiliated company that owns liquid CO2 distribution
assets that are solely leased to EPCO, and immediately lifts Air Products to a position amongst the
leaders in the North American liquid CO2 market.

Expert Opinion 7.1 SIRANE, Simon Balderson Visiongain sought opinion of Simon Balderson, Managing Director of SIRANE - a premier packaging solutions company founded in 2003. SIRANE is an NPD and process development company with full manufacturing capabilities covering the food, medical, horticultural and industrial business sectors. The company has a large distribution network across the world. We interviewed Mr. Balderson in June 2013 and would like to thank him for his time. 7.1.1 Trends and Developments Visiongain: What are the global trends and developments in the MAP market compared to UK? Simon Balderson: UK MAP market’s growth is slower now, because MAP is already mature here, but globally, esp. in Americas or Southern Europe, (where it’s a new industry still) MAP market has got a long way to go. In developing countries it is a new industry that it’s offering new options, like ESL (Extended Shelf Life), which means you can distribute further on. It is a growth industry globally; it’s not so much a growth industry in the UK. The growth depends entirely on the market: there is a significant speed of growth in countries, like Turkey, Brazil, or Mexico. 7.1.2 Challenges and Opportunities Visiongain: What challenges and opportunities are there in MAP market? Simon Balderson: One of the big challenges in MAP is to have a very good temperature control. South Africa is quite a good example: MAP is good in SA, but the cold chain is not very good. So, MAP is a waste of money if the cold chain does not work. MAP only really works properly with good temperature control. Challenge really is to match growth and introduction of MAP with the implementation of better temperature control, in terms of warehousing, transport and so on. The same in Turkey: Turkey has an interest in MAP, but some distances are quite long and the cold chain is ineffective. If you have to ship from Eastern Turkey to the sea, you still aren’t going to get good results, because of the cold chain. The big challenge is really linking MAP with the distribution network and the temperature control. That’s the big challenge. The big opportunity, of course, is the growth thing we talked about. There is a massive opportunity in MAP right across the world, if this challenge of getting the cold chains and distribution network sorted out. It’s a big infrastructure requirement, really. Of course infrastructure takes money, time, investment and education. It’s quite a big challenge, but it’s a very big opportunity in the same way. Leading Companies in the MAP & CAP Market 8.1 Air Products PLC Air Products PLC operates in the industrial, energy, healthcare and technology sectors with a portfolio of atmospheric gases, process and specialty gases, performance materials, and equipment and services. The company had more than 21.300 employees around the world as of September 2013 and operations in more than 50 countries. The Chairman, President and CEO is John E. McGlade. As of 2012, sales of $9.6bn were recorded, with total equity of $6.6bn. Air Products was established in Detroit, Michigan in 1940 by Leonard Parker Pool and was based on the idea of producing and selling industrial gases. The company’s USP was a reduction in distribution costs by building the gas generating facilities adjacent to large volume users. th On March 19 2012, the company announced the acquisition of UK based CryoService Limited which would subsequently be known as Air Products CryoEase Services. This is the third acquisition between the two firms with the first occurring in 1998 when Air Products purchased a 25% stake in CryoService. The company then acquired a majority shareholding in CryoService in 2008. CryoEase Services will offer operational and cost advantages to Air Products. In 2013, Air Products acquired EPCO Carbon Dioxide Products, Inc., a privately-held producer and marketer of liquid carbon dioxide (CO2) headquartered in Monroe, Louisiana. The acquisition also included Louisiana Leasing, Ltd. of Illinois, an affiliated company that owns liquid CO2 distribution assets that are solely leased to EPCO, and immediately lifts Air Products to a position amongst the leaders in the North American liquid CO2 market.
