 Words are not the only way we communicate,
we also use gestures, postures, facial
expressions, pauses etc., to convey our
feelings and behaviour.
 We can refuse to speak or write but it is
impossible to avoid non-verbal
communication.
 Charles Darwin started to study NVC.
NVC is the :
Communication without the use of
words or spoken language.
Transmission of messages or signals
through an eye contact, facial
expressions, gestures, postures, etc.
between two individuals.

All of our bodily movements like the nodding of
our head, blinking of our eyes, waving of our
hands, clapping etc., are guided by our feelings
and thoughts.
These gestures, postures, expressions etc., are the
signals that our body sends out to communicate.
That is why it is called ‘body language’.
It comes from the word “KINESIS” which
means movement.
We can say “the study of body
language or all the movements of our
body is kinesics”
 Interpersonal communication
 Expression of feelings
 Interpreting the other’s behavior
 Expressing ourselves without a
word.
Eyes have such a huge importance in any
kind of interaction.
 Builds connection
 More likely to be respect and listen
 Feeling of being important
 Audience trust
 Easy to receive feedback.
Eyes are hence, the medium of
conveying information about other
people’s attitudes and thoughts.
 6 facial expressions: disgust, sadness,
happiness, fear, anger, surprise.
 Signals in the communication process.
Understanding them is more important.
include smiling, frowning, eye rolling,
appearing bored or interested.
Other facial expressions are :
 Excitement or even shock:
 Winking: signal that we're joking
about a remark we made
 Raising our eyebrows: surprised or
we don't believe what we're hearing.
 A gesture is a form of non-verbal communication in which visible
bodily actions communicate particular messages.
 Gestures include movement of the hands, face, or other parts of
the body like:
 Shoulder shrug
 Fingers crossed: hoping good luck
 Thumbs up: Rubbing of palm: expecting or feeling cold
 Okay sign
 V-sign
 Praying hands
 Eyes rolling: bored
Posture is how we carry ourselves. It tells a lot about us like
how we stand, sit, walk, etc.
It can signal the characteristics and the current emotions and
attitudes of a person.
Posture conveys information about:
 Interpersonal relations
 Personality traits
(such as confidence,
openness.)
 Social standing
 Current emotional states
 Study of how we use time to communicate.
 The meaning of time differs around the world:
 preoccupied
 waste it regularly,
 function better in the morning (early birds),
 perform best at night.
E.g.: going for meetings and job interviews shows
punctuality, keeping schedules.
 If we won’t communicate in proper time then misunderstandings or
disagreements will create problems.
 The word OCU is often used interchangeably with eye
contact.
 Oculesics is a subcategory of kinesics which means it is
the study of eye movement and eye behavior.
 There are four aspects involved with oculesics:
I. Dimension 1: Eye Contact
II. Dimension 2: Eye Movement
III.Dimension 3: Pupil Dilation
IV.Dimension 4: Gaze Direction
It is also called Artificial communication.
It is well known that we react to people on the basis of
their appearance.
The use of personal adornment like clothing,
accessories, makeup, hairstyle, etc. provides important
non-verbal signals about one’s age, social and economic
status, educational level, personality, etc.
 Manage your stress level
 Connect emotionally
 Make a confident entrance
 Maintain eye contact
 Talk with your hands
 Ditch the lectern
 Move
 Connect with people better: expanding our communication
abilities.
 Double your business: Correctly recognizing and adapting to
body language can make or break our business.
 Prevents Conflict
 Improve Your Presence
 Open Up Your World: “Once you start studying body language
it’s like seeing the world in high definition.”
Giving possible wrong signals
Not having an organized language
Difficult to understand
Long Conversations not possible
“Not only what we say but how we
say matters the most.”
Study of voice communication outside of
language.
• Used to describe a wide range of vocal
characteristics like tone, pitch, and speed etc.
• It helps to express and reflect the speaker’s
attitude.
Speaker uses a
vast range of
vocal cues
(signals) like:
a) Voice: It is the context in which the speaker
is speaking. This can include the situation,
gender, mood, age and a person's culture.
Voice qualities like volume, pitch, accent
give each individual a unique 'voice print'.
b) Word Stress: Proper word stress is of
crucial importance in communication. By
putting stress or emphasis on a word here or
a word there in the same sentence we can
change the meaning.
c) Pitch Variation: Most of us introduce
wide variations in pitch while speaking.
These variations are necessary to catch the
listener’s attention and to keep him
interested in us.
d) Pause: The speaking speed is also
accompanied by pauses, at the right
moments. Incorrect use of pauses can
create problems. Too frequent pauses will,
however, spoil the speech.
e) Rate: is Speed of Speaking Measured in
Words Per Minute. Speaking fast or at a high
speed is not fluency. We speak at different
speeds on different occasions and while
conveying different parts of a message.
f) Volume variation: Our speech should be
loud enough to be audible to the audience.
But depending upon the situation, we should
monitor the volume of our speech so as to
generate interest of the audience.
g) Articulation:
It is the clarity in your voice
Manner of articulation describes how the tongue, lips,
jaw, and other speech organs are involved in making a
sound.
E.g. “ P ” – pneumonia or psychology
Clearly articulated message indicates competence and
confidence.
We should speak in such a way that all the word are
understood by the listener.
It was a wonderful and learning experience for me while
working on this project. This project took me through the
various phases and enabled me to know about “Non-
Verbal Communication”.
It was due to this project I came to know much about
different Types of Non- verbal communication and all other
things which are meaningful, useful.
I enjoyed each and every bit of work I had put into this
project.

  • 20. a) Voice: It is the context in which the speaker is speaking. This can include the situation, gender, mood, age and a person's culture. Voice qualities like volume, pitch, accent give each individual a unique 'voice print'. b) Word Stress: Proper word stress is of crucial importance in communication. By putting stress or emphasis on a word here or a word there in the same sentence we can change the meaning.
  • 21. c) Pitch Variation: Most of us introduce wide variations in pitch while speaking. These variations are necessary to catch the listener’s attention and to keep him interested in us. d) Pause: The speaking speed is also accompanied by pauses, at the right moments. Incorrect use of pauses can create problems. Too frequent pauses will, however, spoil the speech.
  • 22. e) Rate: is Speed of Speaking Measured in Words Per Minute. Speaking fast or at a high speed is not fluency. We speak at different speeds on different occasions and while conveying different parts of a message. f) Volume variation: Our speech should be loud enough to be audible to the audience. But depending upon the situation, we should monitor the volume of our speech so as to generate interest of the audience.
  • 23. g) Articulation: It is the clarity in your voice Manner of articulation describes how the tongue, lips, jaw, and other speech organs are involved in making a sound. E.g. “ P ” – pneumonia or psychology Clearly articulated message indicates competence and confidence. We should speak in such a way that all the word are understood by the listener.
  • 24. It was a wonderful and learning experience for me while working on this project. This project took me through the various phases and enabled me to know about “Non- Verbal Communication”. It was due to this project I came to know much about different Types of Non- verbal communication and all other things which are meaningful, useful.
