Presented by Carolyn Caizzi at the Annual Conference of the Visual Resources Association, April 18th - April 21st, 2012, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Session: Engaging New Technologies While the seemingly exponential array of new technologies offers the potential to enhance the services we provide, simply keeping up with what is available (or on the horizon) is a daunting process. This fast-paced session will demonstrate a rich variety of new technologies, emphasizing concrete examples that show engagement in professional contexts. Utilizing the expertise of energetic, tech-savvy presenters, this session will introduce new tools as well as creative uses of more established technologies, demystifying them to empower session attendees to further investigate on their own. Emphasis will be given to technologies that can be readily utilized in teaching, learning, and research environments. Visual Resources positions and job descriptions are constantly evolving. This means that many of us are being asked to do things that are outside of our comfort zone or area of expertise. Last year I was asked to create an area for audio and video recording to support digital storytelling initiatives on campus. Despite repeatedly pointing out that I had no experience working with A/V equipment, it became clear I would be moving forward with this project. In the Fall of 2013 the Digital Media Lab (DML) opened its doors. Not only has it been popular with students and faculty, we have even started to circulate a small collection of cameras and audio equipment. Although, I have learned a bit about A/V equipment, I am by no means an expert and do not intend to become one. This presentation will focus on the DML & Equipment Loan Project and how it evolved. I needed to create partnerships with people in the library and the UMBC community who could help fill in my knowledge gaps and who ultimately became the main promoters of the project. As the project moved forward it became especially important to manage faculty expectations and to keep the project do-able and reasonable. I would also like to solicit feedback from colleagues who find themselves in similar positions. There are many different ways I could take this project and I would be interested to hear what other institutions are doing with regard to A/V support for the communities they serve.

Paper presented at the 12th International Conference on Digital Preservation, November 2-6, 2015. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Abstract: This paper describes how the E-ARK project (European Archival Records and Knowledge Preservation) aims to develop an overarching methodology for curating digital assets. This methodology must address business needs and operational issues, proposing a technical wall-to-wall reference implementation for the core OAIS flow – Ingest, Archival Storage and Access. The focal point of the paper is the Access part of the OAIS flow. The paper first lays out the access vision of the E-ARK project, and secondly describes the method employed to enable information processing and to pin-point the functional and non-functional requirements. These requirements will allow the E-ARK project to create a standardized format for the Dissemination Information Package (DIP), and to develop the access tools that will process this format. The paper then proceeds to describe the actual DIP format before detailing what the access solution will look like, which tools will be developed and, not least, why the E-ARK Access system will be used and work.

WebRTC is a disruptive media technology bringing real-time multimedia communications to HTML5 standards. WebRTC is currently available for billions of users as a built-in feature of common browsers such as Chrome and Firefox. This makes possible the emergence of a truly open and interoperable technology competing with proprietary conferencing solutions and enabling developers to create specific-purpose WWW peer-to-peer real-time media applications in a simple and seamless manner. However, WebRTC developers commonly require more than plain peer-to-peer video conferencing. For this, we introduce Kurento (http://www.kurento.org), a Free Open Source Software (FOSS) initiative build on top of GStreamer providing developers a set of high level abstract APIs making possible the creation of HTML5 multimedia-enabled web application. Kurento pushes GStreamer to the limit building a media server with interesting features such as media recording, media mixing for group communications, media adaption and transcoding, media augmentation, integration with computer vision capabilities, etc. In the talk we will introduce what’s Kurento and how WWW developers can take advantage of it showing the following aspects of the framework: - First, introducing Kurento Java and JavaScript APIs and we explain how they interact with the signaling plane in an application server. This allows WebRTC application developers to create their application logic using popular technologies such as Java EE or Node.js. - Second, by presenting a unique media plane written on top of GStreamer. GStreamer is based on the concept of media pipelines, which can be seen as chains of media elements performing operations to a media flow in real-time. Currently there are more than 1000 media elements written for GStreamer implementing many different capabilities such as codecs (e.g. H.264, H.263, VP8, etc.), recorders and players (for storing/recovering media from files), blenders (for augmenting media), filters (i.e. face blurring, face recognition, etc.) and others. Hence, Kurento enables to inject WebRTC streams into a chain of such elements and perform, in real time, the operations the developer wishes. - Third, introducing and abstraction of all the complexities of signaling, media control and media management through a powerful server-side API that can be used by average developers who do not require particular expertise about multimedia protocols or formats.

VRA 2023 Collections Management in Fashion and Media session. Presenter: Wen Nie Ng The goal of the paper is to enhance the metadata standard of fashion collections by expanding the controlled vocabulary and metadata elements for Costume Core, a metadata schema designed specifically for fashion artifacts. Various techniques are employed to achieve this goal, including identifying new descriptors using word embedding similarity measurements and adding new descriptive terms for precise artifact descriptions to use when re-cataloging a university fashion collection in Costume Core. The paper also provides a sneak peek of the Model Output Confirmative Helper Application, which simplifies the vocabulary review process. Additionally, a survey was conducted to collect insights into how other fashion professionals use metadata when describing dress artifacts. The survey results reveal 1) commonly used metadata standards in the historic fashion domain; 2) sample metadata respondents use; and 3) partial potential metadata that can be appended to Costume Core, which is relevant to Virginia Tech's Oris Glisson Historic Costume and Textile Collection. The expanded Costume Core resulting from the project offers a more comprehensive way of describing fashion collection holdings/artifacts. It has the potential to be adopted by the fashion collections to produce metadata that is findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable.
