Out of This World Space Camp

2. On Tuesday, February 21, 2012 Lillian Feinstein Elementary
School at Sacket Street opens its’ doors during winter vacation
week to students grades K-2 to welcome them to “Out of This
World Space Camp.”
3. THE MORNING BEGINS…
Students separate
into groups
according to grade
level and head
quietly down the
hall to camp.
Students begin each morning with a heart –
healthy breakfast and a morning exercise led by AmeriCorps
Member, Katie Byrne.
4. HOW FAR AWAY ARE THE PLANETS?
AmeriCorps Member, Katie Byrne teaches students about the distance of the
planets in our solar system from one another.
6. WHAT IS THE MOON LIKE?
AmeriCorps Member, Julie Fisher teaches students about the
different phases of the moon.
AmeriCorps Member, Andrew Medeiros shows students what
the surface of the moon looks like.
7. ROCKET MATH

students build comets
out of pipe cleaners,
styrofoam balls, glitter,
and mini pom poms.
11. PREPARING FOR READER’S THEATER
Inspiring Mind’s volunteer,
Erin helps students prepare
for Reader’s Theater through
the pronunciation of words
such
as, constellation.
13. THE EARTH IS SPECIAL BECAUSE…
At the end of the week students were asked to finish the statement: “The
earth is special because…” Then, they were asked to draw their answer to
the following question, “Why is earth special to me?”
14. IT TAKES A VILLAGE
On the last day of winter camp parents,
friends, family, and community members are
invited into Lillian Feinstein Elementary at
Sackett Street to see what students have
been working on over winter vacation and
also, to learn about parent engagement and
tips for reading with children.
