Sustainable Agriculture in prespective of
India for 21 century
Introduction:-
Sustainable Agriculture has dominated the
sociological understanding of the rural world largely. Global
polulation and consequently consumption hasincreased.
In the reference of India, the Agriculturesector
is the backbone of indian economy contributing
approximetly 16.5% of GDP(2019-20) and shares a large
number of total value of country'sexport.
We are the second largest populated country
after china, So we have the challanges by depletion of non-
renwable source of energy, rising costs, climate change has
brought the issue related to sustainbility of food production.
What is Sustainable Agriculture ?
"Sustainable Agriculture is a process of farming using eco-
friendly methods to maintaining the relationship between
organisms andenvironment."
In other words- "Sustainable agriculture is
an amalgamation of three main elements likewise-
ecological, health, profitability."
3. The concept of sustainability sets on the
principle of not to wasting any resources that may become
useful to the futuregenerations.
*Objectives of Sustainable Agriculture*
1.Maintain the human needs oftoday and tomorrow with
quality food.
2.Conserving the natural resources Soil, waterand
biodiversity)
3.Economically viable farming practices for enchanigthe
productivity.
4.Maintaining or improving soil health by growing green
manuring crops instead of using more chemicalfertilizers.
5. Minimal impact on wide environment.
6.Social acceptibility
Different practices of Sustainable Agriculture:-
1.Rotating Crop:- Rotating crops helps to improve pest
management and healthier soil.
2.Embracing Diversity:- Crop diversity protects by the
crops insects and diseases due to wide biodiversity.
4. 1.Planting Cover Crops:- Cover crops help and protect
the health of soil(soil nutrients),preventing soilerosion.
2.Reducing Tillage:- By reducing tillage on your farm
resulting improve quality of soil.
3.Integrated Pest Managment:- By releasing beneficial
insects on your farm control harmful insects and improve
crop production.
4.Adopting Agro-forestry Practices:- Planting tree and
shrubs around your water source can help in prevent loss of
water through evaporation.
5. Managing Landscapes:- By implement uncultivated
areas, reducing nutrient runoff, preventing erosion and
managing biodiversity.
8. Integrated Crop and Livestock:- Instead of alternating
crops you can allow to graze your livstocks by which cattles
consume different plants.
Problems facing Sustainable Agriculture
In India
development is
The main issue in
the necessity to improve
agricultural
productivity,
generate employment, and provide a source of income tothe
poor peoples and farmers of population. Studies byFAO
have says that small farms in developing countries
5. contribute around 30-35% to the total agriculturaloutput.
The system of adoption of modern
technology in India is slow and the farming practices are too
traditional and unscientific. Some of the basic issues for
development of Indian agriculture sector are revitalization of
cooperative institutions, improving rural activities, research,
human resource development, trade and export promotion,
land reforms and education.
Future Prospects and solutions for India
Agriculture sector is an important
contributor to the Indian economy. Sustainable agricultural
production depends upon the efficient use of soil, water,
livestock, plant genetics, forest, climate, rainfall, and
topology. Indian agriculture has the main problems like- lack
of resource, lack of infrastructure, lack of institutes, lack of
technologies and policy induced limitations.
In India, the maximum crop yield is
depend on rainfall, which is the main reason for the poor
growth rate of agriculture sector. So, it is need to support
farmers and provide sufficient amount of water and
electricity to them as they feel insecure. The sustainable
development in India can also be achieved by full utilization
of human resources.
6. Because a large part of poor population of
the country is engaged in agriculture, unless we increase
their living standard, overall growth of this country is not
possible. India has been carrying the tag of "developing"
country for quite long now, for making the move towards
"developed" countries, we must shed this huge dependence
on agriculture sector.
Conclusion
The agricultural technology needs to move
from production to profit sustainable farming. The
conditions for development of sustainable agriculture are
becoming favourable. New opportunities are becoming for
farmers, development workers, researchers, and policy
makers like agro related businesses, dairy farming, poultry
farming castle farming and fisheries.
To conclude, a small-farm management to
improve productivity, profitability and sustainability of the
farming system will go a long way to ensure all round
sustainability.
