Parent to Parent are a National Organisation who have been providing services to “see above” for over 25 years, we have 10 regional offices and a National Office based in Hamilton.
I am their training co-ordinator and have been since March 2007 I am also a VC Vouyeur! (hence the pirate costume)
I am responsible for the co-ordination and development of a number of differnent courses All courses have been created to meet some of the general and specific needs of the families we work with.
Support Parent Training - 18 hour course –course for Parent volunteers looks at communication skills, stress, grief, support and some of the systems people may need to work with.
As an organisation it was recognised that training is an important element to the volunteer roles we ask people to fill, therefore this means that some of the training is compulsory and can not be ignored or reduced time wise. Interest in the courses was out there but not necessarily in the numbers we would have liked, often causing courses to be cancelled due to increasing costs. Trainer fees and expenses were the same for delivery to 8 as they are for 18. Certain courses were not easy to find trainers for, due to the content or experience looked for which again caused an increase in costs with flying people around the country. So how did we go about addressing these?
We carried out some research. We looked at the current structure of the courses and if there was any flexibility in how the courses were delivered. Rather than rely on the overarching course objectives, objectives were put in place for each section of the course giving more clarity to trainers on there delivery. Looking back over evaulations from the last 5 years, suggestions were identified which were of interest. The main courses worked on were the SP and Sibleader courses
Only after attending the courses and seeing how they were being delivered could real change be made. Seeing peoples reactions to the content was a lot more informative than reading the evaulations and workbooks. Sib
Content of courses the same but focused slightley differently. Offering shorter modules and on job trianing provided more awareness of the position on offer. Empowerment Key skills for use in own situation Awareness of similarity and difference Increased participation which could lead to further friendship Confidence and increased awareness of the volunteer position within the organisation Using the VC helps connect volunteers and provides ongoing training opportunities.
Research showed that there was interest and the numbers out there, how to get them involved. SP Course structures – Tried a number of different SP options Split courses with VC follow up session for joint group delivery Weekend, mid week and residential courses These all revolved around delivery of the full 18 hour course with in a three week period Looked at offering shorter modules which could stand alone if needed and which provided something for the participant and something for the organisation.
