Kiev
capital of Ukraine

Kiev is the capital of Ukraine and one of the oldest
cities in Europe. It has a long history and rich
culture. There are many ancient churches,
cathedral, monuments, outstanding buildings and
museums in it. All in all the city of Kiev has a
great number of interesting sights. Perhaps the
most beautiful and famous ones are Kyiv Pechersk
Lavra, Saint Sophia’s Cathedral, Golden Gates of
Kiev, the Monument to Bogdan Khmelnitsky, and
Khrischatyk-street.

The history of Kiev began long ago: according to the
legend, it was wounded by three brothers (the eldest one,
Kyi, gave his name to the city) approximately in the 6th
century. The second Russian prince, Oleg, conquered Kiev
and made it the capital of Rus. Afterword, during the
feudal fragmentation and the Tatar-Mongol yoke, Kiev still
was a symbol of power – until the rise of Moscow. After a
short period of Lithuanian authority, Kiev become of part
of the Russian Kingdom, and of Russian Empire,
remaining the “heart” of particular Ukrainian traditions.
Tragic events of the Civil War and Great Patriotic War did
not damage its value and unique atmosphere.

MONUMENTS
Kiev is the third greenest capital city in
Europe and is considered to be one of the
oldest and most beautiful. You will find many
parks and romantic tree lined boulevards,
and it is especially beautiful in spring and
autumn. It is built mostly on hills overlooking
the river Dnipro.

INDEPENDENCE SQUARE
The Independence
Square, or Maidan
Nezalezhnosti, is the
central square in Kiev,
the main and the most
beautiful one. Parades,
concerts, festivals and
other city arrangements
and holidays take place
on this square.
It contains six fountains, Independence
Column and artificial waterfall.
It is located on Khreshchatyk Street in the Shevchenko Ragion.

ANDRIYIVSKI UZVIZ
(ST.ANDREWSCHURCH)
It is an integral part of the old Kiev, and one
of the oldest streets in Eastern Europe. At
the top of the hill you will see the stunning
"St. Andrew's Church“.
Today the street has become a mixture of
art galleries and artists selling paintings,
and souvenir stalls selling mass
produced Soviet tourist paraphernalia
and old traditional Ukrainian folk crafts.

NATIONAL OPERA HOUSE OF UKRAINE
The National Opera of Ukraine was first
established in 1867, it is the third oldest
opera company in the country. Romantic
theatre with a 200 year history, this
opera house is currently home to the
Kiev Opera Company.
They perform at the National Opera House which was named
after Taras Schevchenko, the famous poet and artist and was
constructed in 1901. Known for drawing world class talent,
this facility is one of the most prestigious in the country.

HETMAN BOHDAN KHMELNITSKY

ST. SOFIA CATHEDRAL
St. Sofia Cathedral is the world
famous historical and
architectural monument of the
first half of the 11th century.
The name of the cathedral comes from
Greek word "sofia", which means
"wisdom". Built in the times of Yaroslav
Mudry, the cathedral served as a social,
political and cultural center of Kievan

MOTHERLAND STATUE
The sculpture is a part of the Museum of The
History of Ukraine in World War II, Kiev. The
whole complex occupies a territory of 20 hectares.
It also includes Great Patriotic war museum,
located directly under the monument. Sometimes
it is possible to take a lift up to the top of the
monument but not always available. You will also
find a collection of Russian and Ukrainian planes,
tanks and military hardware on show.
When you get inside the
shield you will
have a fantastic panoram
ic view of Kiev.

KIEV PARKS AND GARDENS
The main Parks in the centre of Kiev
are Mariins’kyi Park, Volodymyr’s
Hill, Khreschatyk Park, Pechersk
Landscape Park, The City Garden,
and Askoldova Mohyla. Kiev is
especially beautiful in spring,

Kiev is one of the most
beautiful and greenest
capitals in Europe. You are
never too far away from
colourful flowers or the
shade of chestnut tree (the
symbol of Kiev) in the many
parks and Gardens.

THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST
2017 The 62nd Eurovision Song
Contest, which was held in
Kiev, Ukraine. The country
became the winner of the
previous Eurovision-2016
contest, held in Stockholm,
Sweden, with Jamala's song
"1944". 42 countries took
part in the competition.
Portugal and Romania
returned to the competition.
His participation was
continued by Australia.
Bosnia and Herzegovina and
Russia did not participate in
this year's competition. The
competition around the
world was watched by 182
million people, 22 million
less than the record set in
2016.

Pirohovo Museum - features information
about life and folk architecture of

radiation did to animals and other
organisms.
National Art Museum of Ukraine –
dedicated to Ukrainian art
Museum of Miniatures – Overwhelming human capacities
with masterpieces of the talented Mykola Siadrystyi. It
features the world’s smallest book and a golden set of
chess that would fit on a pinhead and many other unique
items.
Bulgakov Museum – Exhibition of
items relating to the eponymous
writer Mikhail Bulgakov.
Pinchuk Art Center – With
collection of 21st century art, and
the largest private museum in
Eastern Europe.

FAMOUS PEOPLE
Ada Rogovtseva (born 6 July 1937) is a
Ukrainian actress. She has appeared in over
30 films and television shows since 1957. She
won the award for Best Actress at the 7th
Moscow International Film Festival for her
role in Hail, Mary!
Vladimir Aleksandrovich Zelensky is a
Ukrainian showman, film actor,
screenwriter, producer, art director and
permanent leader of the studio "Quarter-
95".

Tina Karol the
stage name of the
Ukrainian singer
Tatyana
Lieberman. She got
world fame in 2005
thanks to the
contest "New
Wave". She is a
soloist of the Song
and Dance
Ensemble of the
Armed Forces of
Ukraine.

CHESTNUT - BLOOMING SYMBOL OF KIEV
Our city is beautiful at any time. But most of all
visitors gathers here, apparently still in the spring,
when the Kiev white-pink chestnuts are blooming in
April, because Kiev is called the city of chestnuts.
There are several versions of the appearance of
chestnuts in Kiev. The well-known said that in 1842 on
the arrival of Tsar Nicholas I, the then Governor
General Bibikov imported from the Balkans "an
unknown plant, good looking and nice smelling." The
trees were planted in the alley on Bibikov Boulevard
(now Shevchenko Boulevard), by which the monarch
had to enter the city. However, the emperor expressed
his dissatisfaction. During the night, all the chestnuts
were uprooted and instead poplars were planted.
Fortunately, the townspeople did not let die exotic trees
and planted them in their backyards.
