 Aims are considered as conscious purpose and goals.
 Values are the outcomes or results achieved after teaching according to
these aims.
 They are the actual results of our teaching efforts.
 When we undertake an activity with a particular aim, we may get
different results.
 These are the values.
 Knowledge of value helps the teacher to avoid aimlessness in
teaching.
 When we teach mathematics in the light of its aims, we shall realize its
values.
Values of teaching mathematics may be divided in to ten
categories.
Practical or Utilitarian value
Intellectual value
Social value
Moral value
Disciplinary value
Cultural value
Practical or Utilitarian value
 The knowledge of mathematics is needed at every step or
stage of life.
 Our daily routine, measures and calculations all are dependent
on mathematics.
 When we have to awake? When we have to sleep? When we
have to work? etc. all these evidences are related to
mathematics.
 Each and every person of society needs mathematical
knowledge.
For example,
 A laborer uses mathematical knowledge to calculate wages, to
make purchases from market etc. The fundamentals of
mathematics such as addition, subtraction, counting numerals,
measurements etc. are used by all of us in our daily life.
 A business man uses this knowledge of percentage, average,
stock and share to run his business efficiently.
In this context Bacon has said that, “Mathematics is the gate
way and key of all the science”.
Intellectual value
 One of the most important values of mathematics is that it is
very important for intellectual development.
 There is no other subject in the curriculum like mathematics
which helps students to develop intellectual powers like Power
of imagination, memorization, observation, invention,
concentration, originality, creativity and reasoning.
 As a child faces a mathematical problem his brain becomes
active in solving that Problem.
 In this way, all mental abilities of child are developed through
mathematics.
The following statements will help us to know the intellectual
values of mathematics
“Mathematics is subject which provides an opportunity for the
training of the mind to close thinking, stirring up a sleeping
and uninstructed spirit” -Plato
“Mathematics is like Wheatstone and by its study one learners
to think distinctly, consecutively and careful” -Hubsch
“Mathematics is primarily taught on account of the mental
training it affords and only secondarily on account of the
knowledge of facts it impacts”-Schultze
Social value
 The study of mathematics should enable an individual to
appreciate that man is a social being and h must play an
important role in bringing about social progress.
 Today our social set up or social existence is totally governed
by the study of mathematics.
 History of mathematics openly reveals that whenever a
country has given due weightage to the teaching of
mathematics it has made a tremendous progress
 Mathematics plays an important role in the proper
organization and maintenance of social institutions.
 Moreover, the social values like tolerance, open mindedness,
objectivity, co-operation, honesty, truthfulness and will power
are also acquired by the study of mathematics.
 In this way mathematics played an important role in not only
understanding the progress of society but also to develop the
society.
“The progress and improvement of mathematics are linked to
the prosperity of the state” -Napoleon
Moral values
 Mathematical knowledge is helpful in character and
personality development.
 Child develops the qualities like honesty, truthfulness, justice,
dutifulness, punctuality, self-confidence, power of distribution
between right and wrong, cleanliness, patience, listen to
others and respect them etc. through the study of
mathematics.
 It deprives off the feelings of jealousy, hate etc. These
qualities helps an individual to lead a moral life with sound
character.
Disciplinary value
 The major two aims of teaching mathematics are the
acquisition of knowledge and disciplines the mind.
 Mathematics due its vary nature helps the students to lead a
well-disciplined life.
 It helps the students to imbibe values like honesty,
truthfulness, open-mindedness, objectivity, self-confidence,
self-reliance, patience, will power and it trains the students in
systematic and orderly habits namely concentration,
punctuality, neatness, hardwork, orderliness, regularity and so
on.
 Thus mathematics helps the students in facing the
challenges of daily life with courage and confidence
and enables them to lead a satisfactory life with well-
disciplined mind.
 According to Locke,
“Mathematics is a way to settle in
the mind a habit of reasoning”
Cultural value
 Mathematics has great cultural values, It has helped in
transmitting and enriching our culture.
 It has helped in the development of various subjects
and occupations.
 It is mainly responsible for the progress of our
civilization.
It has been rightly said,
“Mathematics is the mirror of civilizations”
 The person becomes critical observer, logical thinker by
the proper knowledge of mathematics.
 Thus the person becomes more cultured with the proper
knowledge of mathematics.
 Mathematics helps in promoting cultural heritage and
transmitting it to future generation.
 The welfare of our civilization is almost depends upon
scientific and mathematical
