• The Tagore Theatre in Chandigarh was built in the memory of Gurudev Rabindernath Tagore
under the Government of India sponsored scheme during the Tagore Centenary Celebrations.
The Tagore Theatre started its functions in september 1962.
INTRODUCTION
• The key players here were Ar. Aditya Prakash, Le Corbusier, and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret
along with famous film personalities Prithviraj Kapoor and Zul Vellani.
• Tagore Theater of Chandigarh in India, designed by Ar. Aditya Prakash, is one of the master
prices of modern architecture and symbolic of Chandigarh’s architecture style.
• The design is based on all careful study of practices issues like acoustics, sight lines
size of stage with respect to size of auditorium.
• And then its aesthetics such as colour of curtains (originally yellow & red), the
processional routes of entering the theatre .
• These were based on explorations into modern art , in the shape of cube, inspired by
LE CORBUSIER eve more than PIERRE JEANNERET.
OLD STRUCTURE NEW STRUCTURE
• Planning has been made to group the
various units attached to the Theatre in a
manner that will present a compact
structure with all necessary amenities and
comforts.
• A functional aspect of planning has been
adopted so as to give facilities to amateur
as well as professional drama groups for
presenting productions of various types.
• The Tagore Theatre is run by Tagore
Theatre Society which was formed in 1962
with Late Sh. Prithviraj Kapoor , the
renowned Theatre and Film actor as its
First Chairman . The Society was
registered in 1972. Tagore Theatre was
renovated in the year 2008

SERVICES
• FIRE SPRINKLERS :- A fire sprinkler system is an active
fire protection method, consisting of a water supply
system, providing adequate pressure and flow rate to a
water distribution piping system, onto which fire sprinklers
are connected.
FIRE HOSE CABINET :- A fire hose (or fire hose) is a
high-pressure hose that carries water or other fire
retardant (such as foam) to a fire to extinguish it.
On occasion, fire hoses are used for crowd control.
FIRE EXTINGUISHERS :- A fire extinguisher is an active
fire protection device used to extinguish or control small
fires, often in emergency situations. It is not intended for
use on an out-of-control fire, such as one which has
reached the ceiling, endangers the user (i.e., no escape
route, smoke, explosion hazard, etc.), or otherwise
requires the expertise of a fire department.
SMOKE DETECTORS :- A smoke detector is a device that
senses smoke, typically as an indicator of fire. Commercial
security devices issue a signal to a fire alarm control panel
as part of a fire alarm system, while household smoke
detectors, also known as smoke alarms, generally issue a
local audible or visual alarm from the detector itself.
Insulation
Earlier the theatre had cavity walls with
earthen pots stacked in the cavity for good
insulation purpose which was environment
friendly and cost effective.
But after its renovation in 2008 modern
building materials were used and so its
insulation was also done with the latest
acoustic materials.
• Proper Staggering of seats can be
done.
• Ramps can be incorporated.
• Some wheel chair spaces can be
generated.
• Stampede in case of fire as less
exits.
• Seats being left unused due to poor
visibility.
• Balconies left unused specially its last
row which is at the same level as its
second last row.
• Poor visibility from back seats due to
inappropriate depth of the hall.
• Inappropriately staggered seats.
• Less no. of exist doors.
• No ramps for physically handicapped
people.
• No wheel chair space provided.
• Last row of balcony is not elevated.
• Poor visibility of stage from the
balconies.
• No central aisle, best view secured.
• Good seating capacity i.e. 837
people.
• Good acoustics.
• Fire Hydrants system installed.
• Smoke detectors and Sprinklers
installed.
• Good space utilization, canteen and
exhibition area below the house.
