Geologists from the University of Bristol and their
international partners recently uncovered a large
magmatic lake underneath a dormant volcano in
Bolivia, the first discovery of this kind. The huge
deposit is mostly molten rock, or magma.
3. However, up to 10 percent of the underground lake
is comprised of water. In such a large deposit, this
means that the equivalent of Lake Superior is
partially dissolved into the surrounding molten
rock.
Deep underground, pressure levels dictate
whether trapped water will be dissolved into the
magma or released as bubbles. As scientists learn
more about this unique phenomenon, they hope to
gain a better understanding of how water content
impacts eruptions and other volcanic activity
around the world.
