7. WHY VDI?
Reasons for VDI
• Mobility
• Many users needed pc resources in multiple locations

• Economic downturn

• Aging PC fleet
• Due to extending PC life due to economic factors, we have large qty of aging
workstations.
Why VDI vs XenApp, ThinApp, App-V
• VDI provides us a complete solution.
• We have legacy apps that did not package well in other technology.
• Distributed access needs.
• We can still utilize “packaging” apps along with VDI if we desire.

• Dual, quad core 2.0 GHz cpu, 64GB ram
• Repurposed from datacenter virtualization, consolidation project
• Citrix XenDesktop – 2 – Virtual Servers
• One Microsoft SQL, One Citrix XenDesktop Delivery Controller
• Running in virtualized data center
• VMware vCenter – shared with virtual server environment
• Storage – 1 – Dell AX4-5F (Entry Level Storage Appliance)

• 10 Gbe to our VDI environment switch stack
• 1 Gbe to each host from the switch stack
• Prior to Tintri it would take almost an hour to reboot
(“boot storm”) an entire host of desktop (35 max), with
Tintri, I can reboot (“boot storm”) 150 desktops in
around 5 minutes!!!
• In 5 months of production use, Tintri has yet to serve
any daily desktop use data from anything other than
“Flash”, the only time the appliance serves from disk
is during nightly backups!!

12. DISCUSSION – WHAT WE LEARNED
Hardware/Infrastructure
• Latest greatest hardware not required for hosts
• Network performance is not a problem in our environment
• During normal office desktop utilization 300-900 kbits (less than 1% of 100mb link)
• Thin/Zero client vs Repurposed PC product
• We use Dell/Wyse Xenith zero-clients.
• Tested several “thick to thin” products, found them unstable and not mature
Software
• Why Citrix XenDesktop vs. VMware View
• WAN user experience far superior (via internet or private global network)
• Greater product acceptance worldwide
• Unidesk Gold Image
• Keep the same original install forever!!
• Windows version
• Migrating to virtual desktop of same OS, (XP to XP, Win 7 to Win 7) allows for much
easier transition.

13. DISCUSSION – WHAT WE LEARNED
User Experience
• Some struggles early
• Few bugs in software
• Issues with conversion from Windows XP to Windows 7
• Recent feedback
• “Faster than my desktop.”
• “I love the mobility!”
• “When can I get one?”
• “Can you deploy to these users in my department also?”
• “I can’t tell the difference between this and my desktop.”
