Mini Project- Shopping Cart Development

Abstract
The following resources come from the 2009/10 BSc in Internet Technology and E-Commerce (course
number 2ELE0076) from the University of Hertfordshire. All the mini projects are designed as level two
modules of the undergraduate programmes.

The objectives of this module are to examine the structure of shopping cart on e-Commerce websites and
understand various usage of shopping cart:

     •     Identifying successful usage of shopping cart on e-Commerce websites
     •     Identifying different types of programming languages used for creating shopping cart
     •     Analysing different structures of shopping cart
     •     Using one of the chosen language to create a shopping cart for an online book store website.

This project requires examination of several famous e-Commerce websites and their individual usage of
shopping cart. Students are required not only understand the successful examples on shopping cart usage,
but also create their own shopping cart for an e-Commerce website.

Section 1. Project Introduction
1. Learning Outcomes assessed (as taken from the DMD)


All Learning Outcomes specified in the Definitive Module Documentation are assessed as part of this
miniproject, the specific Learning Outcomes are:
Knowledge and Understanding
   •   Be able to analyse and breakdown problem tasks into manageable steps.
   •   Integrate previous and concurrent learning and to use it to solve technology-based problems.
   •   Be able to describe the project life-cycle appropriately.
   •    Be able to select appropriate Internet Technology and e-Commerce and techniques for a given
        situation.
Skills and Attributes
   •   Produce a solution to a defined Internet Technology and e-Commerce Technology problem.
   •   Carry out a simple critical evaluation of their solution.
   •   Demonstrate an ability to work effectively in a team, small groups and individually.
   •   Demonstrate an ability to manage time and resources effectively.


2. Project Title: Shopping Cart Development


3. Project Objectives: (technical, specific to this project)
   To examine the structure of shopping cart on e-Commerce websites and understand various usage of
   shopping cart:

   •   Identifying successful usage of shopping cart on e-Commerce websites
   •   Identifying different types of programming languages used for creating shopping cart
   •   Analysing different structures of shopping cart
   •   Using one of the chosen language to create a shopping cart for an online book store website

4. Project Summary: (50 words max)
This project requires examination of several famous e-Commerce websites and their individual usage of
shopping cart. Students are required not only understand the successful examples on shopping cart usage,
but also create their own shopping cart for an e-Commerce website.

5. Introductory Lecture (2hrs) Content:
   •   General concepts of e-Commerce
   •   General introductions of shopping cart on e-Commerce websites
   •   Introductions of programming language used to create shopping cart



6. Preparation Session (3hrs):
To determine the different usages and structures of shopping cart on different e-Commerce websites.

7. Day 1
Expected Outcomes for the day:
Students working individually must identify e-Commerce websites that are using shopping cart. Students
should be able to present different types and usage and structure of shopping cart.

Assessment criteria; the way in which the work has been planned and managed, students need to carry out
all work individually at this stage, and present the outcomes to the whole class at the end of the day.

Key Tasks:
   •   Identifying successful e-Commerce websites that are using shopping cart
   •   Identifying and analysing different types of usage and structure of shopping cart

   •   Presenting the outcome to the class

8. Day 2
Expected Outcomes for the day:
Each student need to create a shopping cart base on their understanding from Day 1, and present the design
structure to the whole class.

Assessment criteria; the way in which the work has been managed, the functionality of the shopping cart
and how well it meets the specified requirements and how robust the shopping cart proves to be using the
test plan.

Key Tasks:
   •   Critically evaluate the presentation from day 1
   •   Developing own shopping cart for an online book store website
   •   Presenting the design structure to the class and receiving feedbacks from peers

9. Facilitator guidance (key ideas to draw out from students):

Day 1: Understanding of different usages and structure of shopping cart on e-Commerce websites

Day 2: Developing shopping cart for an e-Commerce website

Section 2. Project Day 1 Activity Briefing Sheet
In this mini-project you are required to design and create a shopping cart for an e-commerce website, with
proper usage of Active Server Pages (ASP) technology or other relevant languages.

Key Tasks for the Day

    1. Choose an area as the scheme of your e-Commerce website, and agreed by the lecturer

    2. Setting for a e-Commerce website by using HTML or other web creation languages / technologies

    3. Creating a simple database to support this website

    4. Using ASP or other chosen languages start to create the Shopping Cart

    5. Link the shopping cart with your e-Commerce website if you’ve created the Shopping Cart

Expected Outcomes by the end of Day 1

    1. A fully functional shopping cart linked into a e-Commerce website

    2. Good understanding of ASP or other relevant languages

    3. Demonstrating your code to the lecturer (during the afternoon)

    4. Submitting all source code through StudyNet

    5. Submission with relevant references

Section 3. Project Day 2 Activity Briefing Sheet
In this mini-project you are required to complete the Active Server Pages (ASP) technology (or alternative
technologies) based shopping cart with an e-commerce website.


Key Tasks for the Day

    Complete the e-Commerce website with APS (or alternative technologies) shopping cart, and
    demonstrate to the lecturer


Expected Outcomes by the end of Day 2

    1. A fully functional shopping cart linked into a e-Commerce website.

    2. Demonstrating your code to the lecturer (from 4pm).

    3. Submitting all source code through StudyNet.

    4. Submission with relevant references.

Mini Project- Shopping Cart Development Author: University of Hertfordshire Date created: Date revised: 2009 Abstract The following resources come from the 2009/10 BSc in Internet Technology and E-Commerce (course number 2ELE0076) from the University of Hertfordshire. All the mini projects are designed as level two modules of the undergraduate programmes. The objectives of this module are to examine the structure of shopping cart on e-Commerce websites and understand various usage of shopping cart: • Identifying successful usage of shopping cart on e-Commerce websites • Identifying different types of programming languages used for creating shopping cart • Analysing different structures of shopping cart • Using one of the chosen language to create a shopping cart for an online book store website. This project requires examination of several famous e-Commerce websites and their individual usage of shopping cart. Students are required not only understand the successful examples on shopping cart usage, but also create their own shopping cart for an e-Commerce website. Learning Outcomes assessed (as taken from the DMD) All Learning Outcomes specified in the Definitive Module Documentation are assessed as part of this miniproject, the specific Learning Outcomes are: Knowledge and Understanding • Be able to analyse and breakdown problem tasks into manageable steps. • Integrate previous and concurrent learning and to use it to solve technology-based problems. • Be able to describe the project life-cycle appropriately. • Be able to select appropriate Internet Technology and e-Commerce and techniques for a given situation. Skills and Attributes • Produce a solution to a defined Internet Technology and e-Commerce Technology problem. • Carry out a simple critical evaluation of their solution. • Demonstrate an ability to work effectively in a team, small groups and individually. • Demonstrate an ability to manage time and resources effectively. 2. Project Title: Shopping Cart Development 3. Project Objectives: (technical, specific to this project) To examine the structure of shopping cart on e-Commerce websites and understand various usage of shopping cart: • Identifying successful usage of shopping cart on e-Commerce websites • Identifying different types of programming languages used for creating shopping cart • Analysing different structures of shopping cart • Using one of the chosen language to create a shopping cart for an online book store website 4. Project Summary: (50 words max) This project requires examination of several famous e-Commerce websites and their individual usage of shopping cart. Students are required not only understand the successful examples on shopping cart usage, but also create their own shopping cart for an e-Commerce website. 5. Introductory Lecture (2hrs) Content: • General concepts of e-Commerce • General introductions of shopping cart on e-Commerce websites • Introductions of programming language used to create shopping cart 6. Preparation Session (3hrs): To determine the different usages and structures of shopping cart on different e-Commerce websites. 7. Day 1 Expected Outcomes for the day: Students working individually must identify e-Commerce websites that are using shopping cart. Students should be able to present different types and usage and structure of shopping cart. Assessment criteria; the way in which the work has been planned and managed, students need to carry out all work individually at this stage, and present the outcomes to the whole class at the end of the day. Key Tasks: • Identifying successful e-Commerce websites that are using shopping cart • Identifying and analysing different types of usage and structure of shopping cart Page 2 of 6

Day 2 Expected Outcomes for the day: Each student need to create a shopping cart base on their understanding from Day 1, and present the design structure to the whole class. Assessment criteria; the way in which the work has been managed, the functionality of the shopping cart and how well it meets the specified requirements and how robust the shopping cart proves to be using the test plan. Key Tasks: • Critically evaluate the presentation from day 1 • Developing own shopping cart for an online book store website • Presenting the design structure to the class and receiving feedbacks from peers 9. Facilitator guidance (key ideas to draw out from students): Day 1: Understanding of different usages and structure of shopping cart on e-Commerce websites Day 2: Developing shopping cart for an e-Commerce website 10. Project Day 1 Activity Briefing Sheet In this mini-project you are required to design and create a shopping cart for an e-commerce website, with proper usage of Active Server Pages (ASP) technology or other relevant languages. Key Tasks for the Day 1. Choose an area as the scheme of your e-Commerce website, and agreed by the lecturer 2. Setting for a e-Commerce website by using HTML or other web creation languages / technologies 3. Creating a simple database to support this website 4. Using ASP or other chosen languages start to create the Shopping Cart 5. Link the shopping cart with your e-Commerce website if you’ve created the Shopping Cart Expected Outcomes by the end of Day 1 1. A fully functional shopping cart linked into a e-Commerce website 2. Good understanding of ASP or other relevant languages 3. Demonstrating your code to the lecturer (during the afternoon) 4. Submitting all source code through StudyNet 5. Project Day 2 Activity Briefing Sheet In this mini-project you are required to complete the Active Server Pages (ASP) technology (or alternative technologies) based shopping cart with an e-commerce website. Key Tasks for the Day Complete the e-Commerce website with APS (or alternative technologies) shopping cart, and demonstrate to the lecturer Expected Outcomes by the end of Day 2 1. A fully functional shopping cart linked into a e-Commerce website. 2. Demonstrating your code to the lecturer (from 4pm). 3. Submitting all source code through StudyNet. 4.
