Calendar Showing New Year's - January first is New Year's. Explain how dates can be written in many different ways. Examples: January 1, 2008, Jan. 1, 2008, 1-1-08, 1/1/08, etc.
Clock – Explain that midnight is twelve o'clock. It can be written with numbers: 12:00 a.m. Show the class the hands of the clock. The short hand indicates the hours and the long hand indicates the minutes. Midnight is when both hands on the clock are straight up.
Confetti and Streamers – Confetti and streamers can be released from the ceiling or thrown by people. Confetti is short and streamers are long. Confetti is difficult to clean up.
Noisemakers – These party favors come in many styles. They can be like horns, whistles, or rattles. They are popular at New Year's parties.
Sparklers – These fireworks are lit with matches or lighters. Small children can be injured by sparklers. Sometimes sparklers burn quickly and get stuck to the skin of the child's hand. Remind students to be careful with sparklers around children.
Fireworks – Some cities have firework displays. They usually have them over lakes or in high school stadiums. Fire departments monitor public firework displays. There are usually several fire trucks at the scene.
Midnight – When the clock strikes midnight, it is New Year's. People blow party makers and cheer. Music plays.
New Year's Kiss – Couples kiss and hug at midnight.
