5. WHAT ARE HEALTHY GUMS?
• A healthy mouth is not just about having white teeth but also healthy gums.
• Healthy gums should look pink and firm, not red and swollen.
• Healthy gums act as a barrier between bacteria in your mouth and prevent these
harmful bacteria from entering your body.
• Healthy gums will form a good seal at the gum margin so no bacteria are able to
penetrate this area.
6. SIGNS OF UNHEALTHY GUMS
• Gums that are red, puffy or swollen, or tender
• Gums that bleed during brushing or flossing
• Teeth that look longer because your gums have receded
• Gums that have separated, or pulled away, from your teeth, creating a pocket
• Changes in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
• Pus coming from between your teeth and gums
• Constant bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth
7. REASONS FOR UNHEALTHY GUMS
• Dental plaque and calculus are the main reasons for gum disease.
• Even many systemic disease like diabetes , some drugs leads to unhealthy gums.
• Unhygienic oral health habits like no flossing , no brushing leads to poor gums health.
• Dental plaque is soft deposit that forms on the surface of teeth.
• Calculus is hardened calcified plaque.it some times called tartar.
8. WHAT IS GUM DISEASE?
• Gum disease (periodontal disease) means infection or inflammation of the tissues
that surround the teeth. Depending on the severity, gum disease is generally divided into two
types - gingivitis and periodontitis.
• Gingivitis means inflammation of the gums. Most cases of gingivitis are caused by plaque.
This is then called plaque-associated gingivitis.
• Periodontitis means 'inflammation around the tooth'. It occurs if gingivitis becomes worse
and progresses to involve the tissue that joins the teeth to the gums (the periodontium),
and/or the supporting bone.
9. STAGES OF GUMS DISEASE
• Mild gingivitis does not cause any symptoms and so you may not realise that you
have it. The gums look slightly swollen and reddened.
• Moderate gingivitis can cause more marked swelling and reddening of the gums. The
gums often bleed a little when you clean your teeth. Discomfort or pain from the gums
is rare if you only have gingivitis.
10. STAGES OF GUMS DISEASE
• Periodontitis often does not cause any symptoms until an affected tooth becomes
loose. However, in some cases, symptoms develop and may include:
– Bad breath (halitosis).
– A foul taste in your mouth.
– Some pus formation in small pockets between the teeth and gums.
– Pain and difficulty eating.
– Affected teeth becoming loose and eventually falling out if not treated.
• An examination by a dentist to detect the presence and depth of gum pockets is
needed to confirm the diagnosis of periodontitis.
11. HOW CAN I PREVENT GUM DISEASE?
• Good oral hygiene helps to keep plaque down and usually prevents gum disease.
• Brushing your teeth - for two minutes, at least twice a day. Ideally, brush your teeth
either just before eating, or at least an hour after eating.
• Dental floss cleaning between your teeth after brushing once a day, but ideally twice a
day. This is to remove plaque from between teeth's.
• Regular check ups by dentist or dental hygienist.
• Every six month scaling advised.
