Hello and welcome to the University of Florida Libraries! Distance Learning students, faculty, and staff enjoy the same library privileges as on campus students. In this brief presentation you will be introduced to some of the many services and resources that the library has to offer. We hope that you will be able to make full use of the libraries to enhance your coursework at the University of Florida.
The Smathers Libraries serve programs in Education, Fine Arts & Architecture, Humanities & Social Sciences, Journalism & Communications, Music, and Science & Engineering.
This presentation will answer the following questions:What materials are available through the UF libraries? What services does the library provide?Who is the subject liaison for my department and what can my librarian do for me?
What materials are available through the UF libraries?E-books! The UF libraries have a wide variety of electronic books available! Our e-book collections range from novels to computing guides. To locate e-books, search the library catalog. Any time you see the little red “e” icon, you should be able to use that book electronically. E-Journals! We have thousands of electronic journals, newspapers, and magazines to support your research. Once you have searched for a journal or newspaper title in the catalog, look for the little red “e” icon to find the electronic version. Databases! The UF libraries subscribe to hundreds of online databases, which are accessible from off campus as long as you are logged on the the VPN or EZProxy server.Course Reserves! Many professors use our electronic course reserves system to post assigned course readings including articles and book chapters. The UF libraries provide copyright clearance, scanning, and reserves purchasing for these materials. To access all of these materials, distance faculty and students will need to use the VPN or off campus access link from the libraries home page.
Subject guides! Our librarians have designed web pages that can help your students find the best resources for their research topic. These Subject Guides are online through our library homepages and available 24/7. They will link you to the very best article databases for your subject and give you an overview of what materials the library has to offer!
Digital Collections! The UF Digital Collections offer an array of completely electronic material including oral histories, maps, images from our University Archives, scanned herbarium specimens, and rare books from the University of Florida Special Collections. It is a great place to explore materials that are unique to the UF Library collections. We’re also on Flickr! Here you can comment on images or build Flickr widgets for your own webpages and blogs. These materials are freely accessible on the web and do not require off campus log on.
The UF Libraries also have their own You Tube Channel. It includes videos from our special collections archives as well as instructional videos for undergrads. These instructional videos include a tutorial on how to do undergraduate research called “Librarians to the Rescue” and a “UF Libraries Orientation” which includes tours of our on campus libraries detailing what they have to offer.
What services does the library provide? The Library provides many services to distance faculty staff and students. These are some of the most important services to know about:Off Campus Access ILLCourse ReservesAsk A Librarian Subject Specialists
To gain access to the full range of electronic resources available through the UF Libraries, you will need to verify that you are affiliated with UF by logging on either through the VPN or the Library Proxy. We recommend downloading the VPN, or virtual private network, to ensure a stable seamless connection. The VPN allows you to securely connect to and access services as if you were on campus. All you will need to download this software is yourgatorlink username and password. The VPN software is ideal for connecting to campus from your personal laptop or computer. For temporary access to library resources from any computer, you can use the Library Proxy or “EZ Proxy”. Just sign in with your gatorlink username and password OR use your library barcode information on your Gator 1 card. For more information on Off Campus Access, click on the “off campus access” link on our library homepage.
You can request books and journal articles that the UF libraries don’t own through ILL! Also, if you are located outside of Gainesville permanently, you can register to have books, journal articles, and other materials sent to your off campus location.
Course Reserves! Many professors use our electronic course reserves system to post assigned course readings including articles and book chapters. The UF libraries provide copyright clearance, scanning, and reserves purchasing for these materials.
