Community Program Officer at Triangle Community Foundation But here’s what I really want you to know: 32 years old Grew up in a giving family where we had to divide our allowance into 3 baskets: spending, saving, & giving Had a life changing experience at an internship during the summer after my first year of college and decided that I wanted to my career to be about making the world a better place … and I really do believe that: We can make the world better. Through this presentation, my hope that you’ll join me in this work.
Introduction to TCF Giving in the Triangle Triangle Gives Back Why give? How can you give? How can giving work for you? Resources
Started with $3,000 26 years ago We help individuals, families, and business meet their charitable goals, make a high impact difference with their money. We using giving as a tool to address community issues We think regionally about the big issues that we’re facing and we help find creative ways to address those issues
We all know that the Triangle tops many “Best Of” lists: #1 America’s smartest cities #1 high tech region #1 region for biotechnology #1 business climate #1 city for education #1 city for business and careers #1 best place to live We wondered how the Triangle would rank in terms of giving: How generous are we? How many of you have volunteered with an organization in the last month? How many of your have donated money to an organization in the last year? TCF commissioned a study in 2008 to learn how the Triangle compares to peer communities across the country when it comes to giving We were surprised by the results
We lag behind Most charitable giving comes from individuals Individuals in the Triangle give less than the state average (4.4% of annual income), less than other NC regions, and less than peer regions like Austin and Portland. People who have less give more Shallow pool of business giving Many companies are engaged in our community – but all companies need to do more in order to ensure the long-term economic vitality of our region We all have time, talent, & treasure to give The good news: We all have the ability to give TCF encourages you to think of the time, talent, and treasure that you can give to make the region a better place for all that live here. Cash donations, volunteer time, board service, advocating on an issue that matters to you, giving of products & services Change is in our hands This is our time, it’s no one’s responsibility but ours. TCF has tools to help and we hope you’ll join us.

This resource provides information about where to give back, but perhaps we should step back and ask the larger question: why should you give?
We are the ones we’ve been waiting for It’s our generation’s turn We’re the generation of innovation We think, move, and create quickly We’re willing to experiment, learn, and re-tool Our employee power You being here and your business being a member of the Chambe tells me that your company cares about being engaged in this community Increasing businesses are looking to their employees to help direct their corporate giving efforts They are looking to you to learn what’s important Because employees are their number 1 assets, they want their giving efforts to allign with their employees’ preferences All levels of giving can make a difference The needs in this region are great. Yes, we top many best of lists, but that prosperity has not reached all of us equally. Right now, just a few miles from this building, people are struggling to pay their rent, to care for their children, to find their next meal. Your giving can change that. Nationally and here in the Triangle, people who have less give more. It’s people making the least who tend to give the most. Time and talent also make a huge difference. Personal and professional benefits Giving isn’t just about what we do for others It’s also about what we’re doing for ourselves.
Professional Benefits: Networking Important of a wide professional network is important now more than ever. In times of economic uncertainty, our network is our safety net. Increased visibility Leading giving initiatives within your company is an opportunity to increase your professional visibility and demonstrate leadership skills that you may not have the opportunity to demonstrate in your current position. Opportunity to become a recognized experts when you volunteer your expert skills in some ways. For example, you might showcase your management skills to help a nonprofit organization develop and implement a business or marketing plan. Skill development Public speaking skills Workplace communication skills Ability to deal with external clients Career exploration Maybe you’re not satisfied with your current position? Maybe you’ve always wondered about working in the charitable sector? Volunteering, serving on a board, and becoming engaged with a nonprofit is a way to explore that potential path Personal Benefits: Personal growth Learn more about yourself: What lights you up? What frustrates you? What makes you feel good to be alive? Socialize Meet like-minded friends or find your life partner! Health and well-being improvement Research shows that being engaged in community helps us live longer, happier lives …And maybe most importantly, we’re all looking for a little inspiration: Giving is the antidote to the bad news that can seem pervasive – oil spills, child abuse, teenage pregnancy – Giving is your way to DO SOMETHING.
Time, Talent, Treasure Time: Volunteering once a week Talent: Serving on a nonprofit board, offering your professional expertise Treasure: Cash, company products & services Create a plan Give and involve others Stay informed
Obligatory, Episodic, & Strategic Giving Different types of giving and they are all important Obligatory Giving: Church, university, United Way campaign, a friend asks you Episodic Giving: Volunteer day organized by company Strategic Giving: Thinking you what you want to change in the world and aligning your giving with that intention Identify personal interests and community needs Where have you given in the past? What stories in the news speak to you, make you laugh, cry, get angry? What specific skills do you have to offer? Budgeting, communications, food prep Budget for giving What resources do you have available? How will money be used? How are volunteers trained and supported? How much of your gift goes to operating expenses vs. program expenses? Think about joining with others Pool resources to have a larger impact Integrate giving into emerging leaders or other work- based affinity groups Investigate Giving Circles as a tool for your charitable giving
A local story Giving circles are groups of people that pool their charitable dollars and talents and make collaborative decisions about where to give. The Beehive Collective is a local example of a giving circle. They started as a group of young women in Raleigh and have grown into a strategic group of givers. They choose an issue. Learn about that issue. Pool resources and organize creative events to raise more money to give. Give more as a group than any one of them could ever give as individuals.
