Great Ways to Build Relationships with Clients
It’s important to build relationships in and out of the business realm. Whether it’s a friend, colleague, or
associate. In the business realm all of these types of people can become clients or refer you to a future
client. A company’s success centers largely on these nurtured relationships particularly in the earlier
stages. Gaining trust, showing your core values, and providing a great service to those clients can make
or break that company’s future. Becoming a trusted partner instead of just another company offering
services sets you apart from the competition. The key is to turn these one-time clients into consistent
ongoing projects.
1. Get to know your clients and potential client base:
Know who you want to work with. Decide who your target market is going to be, who you want to
concentrate on and then began to learn them. Learn about their industry, the places they frequent, the
business structures they use. You don’t have to be an expert but you will need to understand the way
they work. This will help with your interactions, help you market efficiently, and provide the right
services for their company.
2. Show them all favoritism.
Satisfied clients will bring in more clients. We like to call these referrals. Repeat business makes up for
the majority of a company’s income. Treat each client as if they are your favorite. Reward them, offer
specials, and remember birthdays and special occasions. When you treat clients with respect and
favoritism they will remember. When they relocate, switch jobs, and/or meet new people that need
help your name will come up.
3. Be thorough
Going the extra mile for a client goes a long way. The more you can offer a client; the more they can
depend on you. And value is what you want to offer. Share useful tips with the client even if it has
nothing to do with work. This is why it’s useful to know as much about the client as possible. If you know
8. the client is looking for a babysitter and is having a hard time. Send them a few suggestions should you
run across them. But remember if you know it won’t interest them, don’t make the suggestion.
Always check in and provide follow up. Check in with the client periodically. I work with most of my
clients on a weekly basis. Some on a monthly. For my weekly clients I send a check in email at the
beginning of the week to let them know I am available and my schedule for the week just in case. I also
ask any question concerning work and recap the last week’s progress. This is also a good practice to do
before and after each project for adhoc. clients. This helps to remember details of a project, and to let
them know where you are spending most of your time and their money, and meeting deadlines. Let
them know you received their correspondence even if you don’t immediately have an answer.
Reassurance goes a long way.
Always stick to your word. There should be no question in a client’s mind that you won’t get something
done. If for any reason you cannot follow through or there is a problem; your check in and follow-up
should reflect this. Build a partnership with your client, relieve their worry, build trust, and don’t waste
their time and money. Always offer to discount a service or refer them to someone you trust that can
get the work done.
4. Have a presence
If you want to cultivate and grow your working relationship correctly, a partnership is important to
build. Building a brand is something that is mentioned a lot in the world of business and is actually very
important. That same image that you put out in the world of social media and your networking is just as
important when it comes to keeping and building relationships with clients. A monthly or weekly
newsletter keeps your clients up to date with the goings on of business. Include tips and advice, fun
anecdotes, a recipe, a contest. Don’t be a hermit and stay in the dark until a service or product is
needed. Email frequently but don’t over run their inbox. Leave a nice post on their social media,
comment on a blog entry. Don’t hide behind the computer, pick up the phone, and schedule a meeting
in person or on Skype. All of these things will create a presence. It sends a message that they are more
9. than a dollar sign. It says you care.
5. Be Patient
Relationship building takes time. Don’t overdo it, you can become a nuisance pretty quickly. Taking the
time to get to know your client, showing them they are important, going the extra mile, and having a
presence will get the job done. Remember to share a little bit about yourself as well. You want to appear
human. Above all make sure your product or service is worthy. No amount of client relations effort is
worth your time if your work is poor. As your business and your client relationships grow; the benefits
of offering great services increase. Clients remember the times you came through for them and it opens
the door to additional revenue streams that you had not previously considered.
Be patient, and if your motives are pure and work is superior great partnerships can be built.
