8. Important 5G Technologies you need to
know about
Last time a new mobile
infrastructure technology came out,
Japanese were unprepared.
Companies thought their 3G
feature phone business would
continue and did not foresee
innovation based on smartphones.
They lost their handset business,
the network infrastructure business,
lost out on Pokemon GO!
This time the Japanese
Government and
industry are all in on
Innovation and pushing
the industry to take
innovation.

10. AI Edge Computing
With the NVIDIA EGX Stack,
traditional IT issues of installing
software on remote systems
disappear. Using Helm charts,
containers, and continuous

now deploy updated AI containers
effortlessly in minutes. Provides
massive T4 level compute to the
5G edge.
Develop CUDA based AI model,
put it into container and release
via EGX and in one go, you can
deploy nationwide in Japan

I would like to give you a brief overview of Japanese telecom industry and why you should coeme to do business in Japan. 2020 is the year of Olympics in Japan but also the year of 5G Rollout. All 4 major MNOs will be launching their 5G services in Japan. These include NTT Docomo, KDDI au, Softbank and Rakuten Mobile.
5G Technology give you super fast speed, low latency and massive connectivity. This new generation of technologies will create huge opportunities for innovation. That is why the Japanese Government and mobile operators are committed to bring close to 100% area coverage within 5 years. Already 1000s of companies have participated in 5G POC and Japan is ready for Spring launch to coincide with the Olympics.
Last year the Government allocated Sub 6 Ghz and millimeter Wave specturums to 4 operators according to their planned budgetary spending. Over 90,000 base station installation planned and of which 70,000 will be installed by mid 2023. Aggregated budget for 5G infrastrure is planned to be over $15 billion dollars.
The Japanese government has decided to allocate supplementary budget of $10 billion in 2020 for 5G and AI to showcase to the world during the Tokyo Olympics. MNOs will be given 30% tax incentive if they expediate their 5G infrastructure installation by 30% increase. Ministries across the board have been given mission to bring 5G and AI technologies to their domain, which includes education, land infrastructure, transportation and health.
5G smartphone will be launched this spring with MNO’s 5G launch. Apple is planning to release iPhone 12 5G this Autumn. It is important to note that Apple has over 60% market share in Japan, something significantly different from other geographic.
Last time a new mobile infrastructure technology came out, Japanese were unprepared. Companies thought their 3G feature phone business would continue and did not foresee innovation based on smartphones. They lost their handset business, the network infrastructure business. Even Pokemon GO! was developed by American Startup.
This time, Japanese government and industry are getting prepared.
Here are some of the most important 5G technologies you need to know about.
The current 3G 4G LTE radio access network is a spaghetti maze of old hardware technology. Network Function Virtualization will bring down the Capex cost while giving MNOs flexibility to introduce new innovation at faster pace. NFV is software defined!
New 5G technologies such as AI Edge computing, Dynamic Spectrum Sharing, Autonomous driving and Industrial IoT will be based in the new NFV base infrastructure.
One of the best feature of 5G is the low latency but if you run AI model queries on the cloud, you will lose this advantage. That is my use need fast compute on the edge. Nvidia’s EGX places the most high powered server at the edge of 5G infrastructure thus making available AI technology at the edge.
Most of server providers such as Fujitsu, Dell, HPE are ready to supply T4 level cutting edge server to 5G MNOs. This means that those CUDA based AI Models you are developing on Linux machines or in the cloud can be deployed smoothly to the 5G Edge Computing for massive nationwide deployment in Japan.
The Japanese auto sector is under pressure from advent of EV. With Telsa already suppling Level 2 autonomous drive in Japan, other manufacturers are busy working on their AD system and 5G connectivity will play an important part. Already, Toyota and Softbank have teamed up and launched MONET, MaaS based on Toyota EV transportation and SoftBank's 5G network.

For 4G innovation in these area, Pokemon GO! became such a large business that with 5G, people in the industry recognize that this is the area for huge unicorn hits. Stadium class large scale visualization, eSports, XR, games will be good business in Japan.
The government has allocate both sub 6 and millimeter spectrum for local 5G and recently opened application for local 5G. Official start date is set for August 2020. Some of the largest telco related companies such as NEC, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Kyocvera and IIJ have already announced local 5G IoT solutions for manufacturing sector.
5G has its disadvantage such as small coverage and inability to penetrate or go around buildings for the mm wavelength. However, works are underway in Japan to accelerate the 5G adoptions.
Dynamic Spectrum Sharing enables 4G bandwidth to mix-in 5G connectivity. Announced last summer by Ericsson and Qualcomm, KDDI and Sony are promoting this technology to be adopted in Japan.
To enable mm wavelength 5G, AGC and NTT Docomo and Ericsson have announced 5G glass antenna to be placed on buildings windows to relay 5G connection.
Japan is serous about 5G and we are building the infrastructure. But we need more innovation to run on top of this technology and I urge you to consider Israel Export Institute 5G Trade Mission to Japan.
Thank you very much.
