2. Examples of Common Representations
The pop genre being one of the most popular of all the music genres
has many representations in their music videos, such as:
• Narratives – these will commonly be about relationships.
• Camera shots/angles – In many pop music videos there will always
CU’s of the band/artist or usually a money shot.
• Style – Most pop music videos follow the same style (broken
narratives/ narratives).
These are just a few examples of all the more common representations.
In the next few slides, I will elaborate on these representations in
further detail.
4. Narratives Representation
The narrative representation within pop music videos are the most
common and well known. In vast amounts, narrative themed videos are
the most popular are the most popular choice. The narrative theme is
generally suited towards a relationship (break up/getting together).
From our research we have found multiple examples including:
Taylor Swift – We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together
In this music video, a relationship break up is depicted as the main
theme. Not only that but from our research into these themes, we have
come to the conclusion that pop music can recognize themselves in
these situations. Thus, the audience are able to develop a connection
to the artist.
5. Linking With the Lyrics Representation
Linking lyrics with visuals have become a common representation
within pop videos are where the camera shot will reference the lyrics.
TLC – Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls
One Direction – Beautiful
TLC uses this common shot, when it sings the title of the song. This
gives the audience a visual representation. By doing this, it enables the
audience to better remember the lyrics but also may possibly make
them want to buy it. Multiple pop artists/bands have done this in their
music video.
6. Camera Shots/Angles Representation
In the pop music genre, camera shots are vital to establish the
artist/band. These have become more common representations within
the pop genre though theories such as voyeurism which can help
attract their target audience.
Voyeurism can be seen in various pop videos including:
Rihanna – Work
In this music video Rihanna uses voyeurism to attract a male gaze and
get her audience to watch her videos. Voyeurism has become more
prominent in pop videos. From research it can be deduced that
Rihanna noticing her competition is now relying on her body to gain
publicity and attract her audience.
7. Our Music Video
• For our music video we are going to try and incorporate some of the
common representations, by doing this it will help us attract our
target audience. We have decided to do this as it is more common for
the pop genre, we have come to this conclusion based on our
research. The typical features we will be trying to feature in our video
will be linking visuals with lyrics, another feature will be the narratives
and using the title as the theme for basis of the narrative.
