Higher Education Research
After missing the majority of the first open day for The Northern School of Art (my first choice) in
September, I have since revisited another open day. I had fully decided by that point that this was the
university that I wanted to go to.
After submitting my UCAS form applying to Film, TV and Theatre Production at The Northern School of
Art, one course at Northumbria University, Edge Hill University and two different courses at Sunderland
University. I received conditional offers to all these universities aside from The Northern School of Art
where I received an unconditional which I accepted.
Overall, this research and going to open days, experiencing what the university is like firsthand helped
me successfully pick and secure my firm choice of university that I will be starting in September.
CV
With my CV, I altered the first draft to make it look less bland and boring, adding colour and serif fonts
to my name and titles to make them stand out more in comparison to the other text. As well as this I
also added a link to my Create Britain Profile, this way employers would be able to click on and open all
my work, seeing my photographs, videos, podcasts, etc.
Another aspect that I changed was making my CV more fit for the type of jobs that I was going for,
adding my work experience with Meash Media which is relevant to the industry that I wish to work in, as
well as expanding more on my activities that I enjoy outside of work and education and how they are
relate to the industry.
Also, even though I have included jobs that aren’t relevant to the work sector that I want to work in, I
have altered the descriptions slightly to show the transferable skills that I have picked up along the way
that would be helpful in future employment within the media industry.
Personal Statement Drafts
Originally my first personal statement draft I created in Year 12 when I was still studying A Levels. I knew
then that I was intending on doing a degree in media and therefore I didn’t have to change my personal
statement too much. From this I changed that I was doing A Levels to a Creative Media Level 3 BTEC and
expanded about this and how it is relevant to the degree I want to do and what career I aspire to have in
the future. With my education changing I now have many more relevant skills that I have picked up from
my course. Before I was doing English Language, Psychology and Photography as A Levels, the most
relevant of these was my Photography A Level which helped me learn about camera features and
techniques. Now with my media course I have much more camera experience and knowledge (as I am
doing this course full-time and with my Photography A Level, I had to split time with for my other A
Levels), experience with Photoshop, Logic Pro, Premier Pro and much more.
As well as this I now had to add the relevant topics in my circumstances that have changed since writing
that first draft, for example I had no prior work experience of any kind (relating to a media sector or
otherwise) so now had to add about my part time jobs and my work experience with Meash Media. I
also got the chance to add more about my more relevant hobbies that I have picked up along the way,
these include taking band photography for some local bands.
The more I picked up from my course however, the longer my personal statement was, and since there
is a character limit there were certain aspects that I had to remove from it, such as specific dates that
weren’t necessary information and mentions of GCSE’s.
From this personal statement I got accepted into all the universities that I applied for as well as receiving
an unconditional offer from one of these universities.
Logo Creation
I didn't just want to create a simple logo design therefore I created a circular GIF logo that moves and
changes font and colour to make my logo stand out more. Other logos that I created that don't move
could still be used in different settings such as a banner on a public profile.
After creating the first moving logo, I decided that it was slightly too plain and therefore opted to add
another colour to the background of the design, move the text down and make space for company
related icons. The four icons that I chose to use were a lens, camera, film camera and clapperboard icon.
By adding icons, it shows a clear indication of a media related business, specifically photography and
film. One critique is when exporting this second logo, it became more pixelated in comparison to the
first, but overall, I prefer it and thinks it's more relevant and professional.
Business Cards
The first business card draft I made was way too simplistic, so for my second draft I added a piece of my
own photography as well as serif and sans serif fonts to my titles and other information. Following this
draft, I kept the same theme and image. However, I just altered my name at the top of the business card
to red instead of white as well as adding relevant red icons beside my information to add some colour to
my design.
I decided to go for a totally different look for my third draft, creating a front and a back. Overall, I just
didn’t like the look of this design and just preferred those that were only one sided.
My next three designs were very similar, all including the same photograph that was quite neutral with a
pop of red, therefore I decided to have the same theme for my entire business cards. I added relevant
icons to my information as well as an icon or my own logo next to my name.
Overall, my last draft was my favourite out of all my logo designs as I think it is the best put together
with a good blend between the image and the black background, minimalistic logos and text fonts yet
not too plain.
For my second draft I added some of my photography, so that my showreel didn't just include videos. As
well as this, I changed the music and matched up the videos and the photographs to the beat of this new
tune. I also changed the intro by adding an old-fashioned film intro to the background of my title and
logo.
BBC Pitch
After completing and presenting my BBC Pitch to David Longworth, he pointed out to me that when
creating a pitch for a drama you should always have a drafted script prepared as well as talking about
the realistic circumstances of creating a TV show with this idea, how expensive it would be and how
much funding would be needed.
