The document provides information about an upcoming "Come and Go" event at David Elementary School to welcome students and families for the new school year. It will be held on August 19th with staggered times for different grades. At the event, families will pick up their child's teacher assignment and visit their classroom. Kindergarteners are also invited to bring a stuffed animal to a "Teddy Bear Social" during their time slot. The document outlines attendance policies, transportation details, lunch procedures and other back-to-school information to help families have a smooth start to the new year.
1. Welcome, David Dolphins
Welcome to the beginning of a new year at David Elementary! We are so excited to begin this school year.
In order to have a smooth start this school year, the following information will help you and your child be-
COME AND GO
The “Come and Go” is an opportunity for you and your child to meet the teacher and take care of the many small details
involved in beginning a new school year. It will be held on Friday, August 19, 2011. The times are as follows:
KINDERGARTEN 5:00 - 5:45 P.M.
GRADES 1 AND 2 5:30 - 6:15 P.M.
GRADES 3 AND 4 6:00 - 6:45 P.M.
Staggering the times in this manner alleviates some of the traffic congestion encountered with school-wide functions.
For parents who have children in multiple time frames, we apologize for the inconvenience.
At the “Come and Go,” you will enter the cafeteria to pick up a card with your child’s teacher’s name on it. Information
will also be available for upcoming school and PTO activities.
After visiting the cafeteria, you will go with your child to his/her classroom and meet the teacher. At the “Come and
Go,” teachers do not give a presentation on curriculum or classroom management. This is done later on Parent
Information Night.
Attendance!
Attendance is vitally important to your child’s current educational growth and future development. Research
confirms that one of the greatest factors contributing to student achievement is attendance at school.
Tardy Policy
The school is open at 7:30 a.m. for students to go to the cafeteria where staff will supervise them until
7:50 a.m. At this time, they will be dismissed to the classroom. Being in class promptly at 7:50 a.m. helps
them be ready to start their day.
A student is tardy if not in the classroom at 8:05 a.m. If your child is tardy, he/she must
stop by the front office to receive a tardy slip before entering the classroom. When a student is
tardy, an e-mail will be sent to the student’s guardian for notification. Each student is allowed
seven tardies per semester. When a student receives eight tardies, a referral form will be sent
home and it may result in an after school detention for that tardy and every tardy thereafter. The
detention will take place after school from 3:05 - 3:45 p.m. Parents need to make arrangements
to pick up their child at 3:45 that day. This process will start over at the beginning of the second
semester.
2. Lunch
LUNCH ACCOUNTS:
Beginning on the first day of school, parents may send money (cash or check) for their child to set up a lunch
account. A Parent Access Account (more information on the following page) allows parents to see the
amount of money available to the child. Additions by cash or check may be made by sending money to your
child’s teacher.
My Lunch Money.com is a company contracted by CISD to manage parent lunch payments by credit card.
At the beginning of school, you will receive information on how to contact this company if you want to use
this option. All questions regarding this payment option should be directed to the company.
TRANSPORTATION
Students come to school and return home by either day care van, bike-riding/walking, pick-up by parents,
or bus transportation. Children are dismissed in that order. Bus numbers, stops and times can be located
on the CISD website, www.conroeisd.net; click on “What Bus Do I Ride?” Please check the web-
site before coming to the “Come and Go”.
Parents decide how their child will go home each day and must tell the teacher on or before the first day of school.
Changes in the normal dismissal must be made in writing.
The Conroe Independent School District will implement changes in current transportation practices that will become
effective the first day of the new school year on August 22, 2011. Students who live less than one mile from the
schools they attend will not be eligible for bus transportation to and from school. To see if your child is eligi-
ble, please visit the website, www.conroeisd.net and click on the link “What Bus Do I Ride?” The distances to
walk to bus stops for the new school year will be as follows: prekindergarten to sixth grade students may walk up to
600 feet; seventh and eighth graders may walk up to 1,200 feet; and high school students may walk up to 2,400 feet.
Routes and bus stops have been posted on the District’s website www.conroeisd.net at the link “What Bus Do I
Ride?”
Rainy Day Dismissal
A “Rainy Day Dismissal” occurs when we have severe weather determined by Administration. If a “Rainy Day
Dismissal” occurs, biking and walking are not allowed. Please be aware that if your child is not eligible for bus
transportation as noted above, you will need to make prior arrangements for rainy day dismissal transportation.
Each parent will complete a form on the first day of school to identify the method of dismissal on rainy days.
Transportation Changes
Changes in transportation must be made in writing by the parent and sent to the teacher. No changes will be made
without a written correspondence from the parent. We understand that an occasion may arise when it is necessary to
make a last minute transportation change. These occasions should be only in an emergency situation. For the safety
of our children, these changes should be made before 2:00 p.m.
3. Parent Access Center Account
This is an online tool available from CISD to allow parents to see grades, attendance, lunch account
balances, etc., online.
We will be sending our newsletter and other communication home by e-mail and/or phone mes-
sages. In order to make sure that we have your e-mail address, please follow the directions below
to either update or add your e-mail address.
Go to the CISD homepage at http://www.conroeisd.net and click the “Student/Parent” tab and then on
“Parent Access.” Choose “Register for an Account.” You will see an application for parents to view
their student’s information online. Read all of the instructions. Complete the top few lines of informa-
tion, making sure you use the official name of the student. Continue reading the parent access registra-
tion. Just below this paragraph is “Parent/Guardian Information.” The first item is the e-mail address.
If your e-mail information is different, you will be prompted to update your e-mail address. If you do not
have an account, fill in that information at this time. The student identification number is their CISD
number which also happens to be their lunch number. If you are not sure of this number, please look at a
previous report card or call the front office. Don’t forget to click the “I Agree” button.
Please help us by updating this information as soon as possible.
Visitors/Volunteers
We love to have parents come to the school! All visitors to our building must check in and out through the front office with a current
driver’s license or other form of picture identification to receive a badge. Visitors are not allowed to interrupt the classroom during
instructional time unless a prior arrangement has been made with the teacher.
All parents must complete a volunteer application on-line before volunteering at the school or chaperoning field trips.
This application process must be completed each and every year.
Please go to www.conroeisd.net, click on the Parent/Student tab and thenVolunteer in CISD tab.
KINDERGARTEN INFORMATION
THE FIRST FEW DAYS OF SCHOOL: Please feel free to walk your new David Dolphin to the
classroom on this day. On the second day of school, please feel free to walk your child to the classroom door.
Then, let him/her go in on their own. You may want to discuss this in advance so your child will know what to
expect. On the third day of school, the teachers will have shown the children where to wait in the gym/cafetorium
in the morning. They have a special place to sit together and then they are escorted down to their classrooms. On
this day, it is helpful for parents to say goodbye to their children as they get out of the car or at the Good-Bye
Zone if they are walkers. This helps the children to develop a sense of independence and security. Again, the kin-
dergarten teachers will practice this with them on the first two days of school.
BACKPACKS: Backpacks are needed daily. Teachers recommend backpacks without wheels to pre-
vent students from stumbling over wheels while in line throughout the hallways. We want all our stu-
dents to be safe. If your child will be bringing a water bottle to school, it helps to have a backpack
with an outside pocket for the water. Important information is always coming home on Wednesdays.
Please fill out any items of importance and then return folders ASAP.

4. KINDERGARTEN INFORMATION CONTINUED
LUNCH: Kindergarten lunch time will be 11:10 - 11:40 a.m. each day. Home project: Teach
your child how to open and close food containers, so he or she will feel confident eating his or her
lunch without your help.
Parents are welcome to join their Dolphins for lunch any day after Friday, September 30th. This
will give your child time to get used to the lunch routine and be able to show off these new skills in
the lunch line. For the first two weeks, we encourage the children to bring a lunch from home.
After they get comfortable with where their table is, it’s easier to learn how the lunch line works!
RECESS: We do go out daily to our wonderful playground. We ask that parents do not join
their child on the playground. Tennis shoes are required for recess and P.E.
We hope each of our families has had a safe and restful summer. If
there are any questions that we can answer, please do not hesitate to call
our front office at 281-298-4700. We are excited about the coming year
and the opportunity to work with the wonderful families in our David Dol-
phin community!
Sincerely,
Lee Allen
