TEAM BUILDING
TYPES OF GROUPS:
Department Teams:
Individuals focused on a
specialty that they have
mastered.
Problem-solving Teams:
Temporary team that
solves a specific issue.
Virtual Teams:
Communicates digitally
and is based on
strengths/weaknesses
rather than geography.
Cross Functional Teams:
Internal departmental
teams that tackle project
goals.
Self-managed Teams:
Most empowered to make
decisions, complete
assignments and deliver
services.
GROUP CHARACTERISTICS
When describing the characteristics of a group in a work place setting it means you are
describing a team. Simply put, it is a group of people who work together to achieve a common
purpose. In the world of small business, teams may be assembled to perform tasks such as
developing a marking plan, performing specific tasks, or finding ways to improve customer
service. A team is created to complete the goals it is given. An effective team is committed to
completing its goals by using the team‘s resources.
In order for a team to act as a team, everyone must be participating in the creation of a solution.
There is no “I” in team. Each member of a team is essential to the team’s success and, when the
group is given a task, each member knows what their job is and sets out to put in their fair share.
STAGES OF A TEAM:
Forming: Team members’
roles are not clear.
Storming: Team members
push against the boundaries of
the forming stage.
Norming: Team develops
respect for one another,
commitment and progress
ensues.
Performing: Team works hard
without internal friction.
Adjourning: When the team
disbands.
TEAMWORK
When you are working on a job, and have several projects to do, multiple deadlines to meet and
everything has to get done in a timely manner, there is no way that just one person can do it all
by themselves. This is where delegating a team will come into place. If you do not have good
teamwork, nothing gets done, and the key to good teamwork is communication. Each team
member offers a unique perspective and set of talents to the project, making each person a
valuable member of the team. Teamwork increases the efficiency on a project, relieves stress on
the individual and promotes a higher-quality output.

Listen to thosewhohave opinions
 Open minds and supportive responses help with a strongending result.

 Having your thoughts heard is important to becoming part of the team.
 Telling your team members how you feel and what needs to get done creates a more
effective task force.
Rewardingand acknowledging brings fortha stronger team
 People work harder when theyknow that their work is beingseen.
 Those who get rewarded, or acknowledged for the work that theydo, will be encouraged
to work harder, perhaps encouragingthe entire team to do the same.
 Rewardingand acknowledgingwork calls for team checks to make sure that everyone is
workinghard.
