Contemporary Political Issues The Mexican general election of July 2006, was the most heated elections that that ended with the most controversial results ever to have taken place in Mexican history. The initial quick count revealed that the race was in fact too close to call when the “official count” was complete. Felipe Calderon had won by a difference of 0.58% The opposing runner up immediately challenged the results that ended in massive marches, protests, and acts of civil resistance in Mexico city.

4. Trade Issues in Mexico Mexico is the united states third-largest trading partner, while the United States is by far Mexico’s largest trading partner. Mexico had followed a strong protectionist policy for decades until it began to unilaterally liberalize its trade regime in the late 1900’s. In 2009, the Mexican government began imposing retaliatory tariffs on certain U.S. products with a value of 2.4 Billion dollars in exports to Mexico.

5. Diplomatic Relations of Mexico The foreign relations of Mexico are directed by the President of the United Mexican States and are managed through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Mexico has been one of the largest contributors of to the United Nations regular budget. Mexico is considered as a newly industrialized country, a regional power, and an emerging market.
