Courchevel resort was founded in 1946 as Savoie Council wished to boost tourism and make skiing accessible to the masses
From the start, Courchevel was a pioneer in terms of the ski resorts’s architecture and organisation
Over the years, Courchevel and it’s ski area expanded and updated to accommodate the greater number of international clients
5. 1908 – 1945
THE
ORIGINS
1908
Resort’s first hotel in Saint Bon. Opened in summer then opened in winter from 1925
1920
The Saint Bonnais Ski Club was founded
1930’s
the dawn of skiing; several hotels opened in 1550 and Moriond; beginning of Ski jumping
1935
in Moriond, the first ski school (5 ski instructors)
Christmas 1945
first skii lift opened in Moriond; Foundation of the Tourist board

THE BEGINNINGS
April
Council chosed the valley of Saint-Bon (virgin territory) and projected 6 000 beds, 2 ski lifts,
1 cable car, 3 ski jumping hills and
1 golf
May
Saint-Bon Council unanomously agreed the project and sold them Tovets land to build the new resort
June
Construction work on the road to the resort and building of pylons, telephone lines and water conveyance began
October
Building of the first ski lifts
Piste signage was also put in place
November
Savoie Council named the resort

THE BEGINNINGS
1953
Hôtel des Neiges was the first 4* hotel
1947
First hotels founded on the Plateau des Tovets

Courchevel Sports Club founded
1952
Launch of La Saulire cable car up to the resort’s peak. Capacity of 30 people (or 360 per hour)
1954
Emile Allais appointed technical and sports director. He started by redesigning the pistes and founded the role of ski patrollers
1959
Emile Allais bought the first snow groomer to carry out mechanical snowplow tests
8. 1960 - 1990
BOOM AND GROWTH
1961
Creation of the Courchevel Altiport, first of its kind in the world. Regular routes established. Extensive media coverage. Courchevel gained international recognition
1971
First 3 Vallées ski pass: 1 single pass for 250km of connected pistes
1975
