Have you ever worked with a personal trainer?
Finding a personal trainer is not as easy as it might
sound. You hope to walk into the gym and request
a personal trainer then get the perfect one who will
help you reach your fitness goals.
It sounds nice and very easy. But I have tried this
approach and I know others who have tried as well
and ended up with a trainer they did not like. Choos-
ing a personal trainer is as selective as dating. Choos-
ing the wrong trainer brings on terrible results.
There is no “one size fits all” personal trainer. Not
everyone has the same goals. Not everyone has the
same personality.
I want to make the process of choosing a personal
trainer easier for you so that you can get what you
want and be happy the first time around. Also, so
you do not waste time and money and incur stress.
You can reserve all that energy into accomplishing
your health and fitness goals.

Hey, I’m Teena Cathey a Certified Personal Trainer, howev-
er I never ever dreamed of working in this profession. Like
many of you I played organized sports growing up. Basketball,
Softball and track were some of my favorites. But a healthy
lifestyle never truly mattered to me.
I used to practice unhealthy habits before a game or practice.
One time I ate a bag of Hot Cheetos. And I’m not talking
about the quarter bag, I devoured the 99 cent bag of Flamin
Hot Cheetos. Who does that?
Being as active as I was, I could care less about healthy eating.
I really didn’t understand the benefits of it anyway.
I went away for college and attended Columbia College Chica-
go. My unhealthy eating and college lifestyle caught up with
me. During my years in Chicago I gained 30 lbs. I often felt
lethargic, depressed and unattractive. I let that cycle of toxic
mess go on for years!
Until I decided to stop making excuses. I did research on
effective workouts, healthy eating, and hit the gym religious-
ly. Friends and coworkers started noticing my new attitude,
weight loss and glow. They started coming to me for tips on
how they could get into better shape.
After a while I found myself being asked the same questions
over and over, then thought, why not put it on a blog. And
boom! That’s how Teena Cathey Lifestyle LLC was born.
I got the necessary certifications and licenses and now use my
website to educate and inform people on how they can live a
happier and healthier lifestyle and reach their personal fitness
goals. Again I never imagined being a personal trainer, but I
absolutely love what I do and don’t regret anything.

When you are picking a personal trainer you have
the right to be picky. Each of us has our own stan-
dard of what to look for in a date and so each of us
should have our own standard of what to look for in
a personal trainer. And I do not mean searching for a
pretty face and hot body. Look for warning signals.
“When you are picking a personal trainer
you have the right to be picky.”
The majority of you have that list of things that you
want in a guy/girl. Come on! Don’t make that face! I
know you have a list. We all made that list of things
we wanted in a partner in middle school and just
added or subtracted from it as we got older.
Create your dream personal trainer in the same way.
List what you want and use the benefit of being
older to be realistic and specific. If you are stuck in
middle school mode, you are going to say, “I want a
trainer who has pretty brown eyes and a cute butt.”
How will the trainer’s big brown eyes and a cute butt
help you?
Know What You Want In a Personal Trainer

Step 1: Know What You Want In a Personal Trainer

Let me give you an example of what my list would
include.
• Healthy and in shape.
• The personal trainer has competed in and/or
trained someone for a fitness competition.
• Someone who has discipline. And can en-
force it without being a donkey.
• Uphold a good reputation.
• Need to like working with people.
• Creativity and fun spirit is essential.
• They have to have good morals.
These are some qualities I would like my trainer to
have. My personal trainer does not have to possess all
these qualities. But a good splash of everything lends
to a good partnership.
Now it’s your turn. Get out a piece of paper or put
it in the notes section on your phone. Write down
at least five qualities you want in a personal trainer.
Again be realistic and specific. Remember you are go-
ing to be spending one on one time with this person
for an hour a few days a week. You want to make
sure you are comfortable, relaxed and getting a great
deal of value from the experience.
