Dip To Black: We used a dip to black transition after the
jump scare scene, to restore the equilibrium that was
disturbed, also to set the major change in the scenes
and mark the start of the storyline. The soft transition
sets anticipation to the progression of the storyline.
Cross Fade: We used a cross fade transition to end this
scene into the first transition title. This transition
blended the two scenes together with the quote “The
ones you love”. This links the two together as Sydney’s
mother is next to her in the scene also known as the one
you love. This transition also adds to the progression of
the storyline and introduces the first title transition.
Vigorous Flicker: We used this flicker transition for this
jump scare, to add to the intensity of the scene . This
transition increases the scare factor within our target
audience , as it is a jump scare it would be sudden. This
also adds to shake within the actual footage and creates
more reality and scare into the scene.
Propp’s Character Theory
Our storyline does not include all of the type of characters displayed in his theory, but it does outline some of the basic characters. For example “The Helper”-
Warning Sydney- “Don’t Trust her I’ve heard bad things about her”. This establishes Holly’s role as the helper, as she warns Sydney about Mrs Chapel which is in
fact the villain in the narrative . Sydney’s roles is also established as the hero as the storyline progresses in her struggle ,and at the end of the trailer she seems to
have successfully escaped and made it to the end. The Psychiatrist “Mrs Willow” At the beginning she is seen as helping Sydney and suddenly that is completely
subverted when she tells her “ They tell me not to trust anyone, people like you” . Further on in the trailer you also see her demon form which matches the
suspicion raised by Sydney earlier within the trailer.
Clover’s Final Girl Theory
This links strongly with clover’s final girl theory as she seems to survive everything from the beginning to the end. Especially as she has quite an
innocent character, this is the main reason we made her wear a white top, her innocence is determined from the beginning.
Mulvey’s Male Gaze
The age group we chose was 15 and older as that was the audience that was available to us. We also used this as our focus group to carry
out our research . Even though our narrative did not highlight a particular theory in great depth, there was the use of mulveys male gaze and
voyeurism. Mrs. willow is wearing a low V neck top throughout our narrative usually within a mid close up and Mrs chapel in a tight pencil
skirt and blouse and heels usually in a tracking shot or mid shot. Subliminally these characters are being sexualised as they are also not
wearing the colours related to innocence instead dark colours, the camera shots and editing also enhance this fact. The male gaze also
diverts the fact that these two characters are actually the villains in the narrative completely diverting the opinion of our audience as the
narrative progresses.
Levi-Strauss Binary Opposition
Binary opposition was a key theory within our narrative, especially the scenes we had enhanced the dark and dull
lighting to intensify the actions within the scene or a warm tone or bright lighting to enhance the equilibrium. This style
was used within the first scene in the trailer as the warm toned and "homely" atmosphere along with the chilled
soundtrack set the equilibrium which was immediately disturbed with the actions. This completely subverted the theory
as the scene usually foreshadows the events. The view of perception, who Sydney believes is the villain however there is
more than one. The fact of reality, is Sydney seeing the reality or are this events just within her brain.
Todorov’s Narrative Theory
We followed todorov's narrative theory within out trailer as we felt it was the most relative theory to our storyline. A lot of camera shots and scenes
created a sense of equilibrium and then it was suddenly disturbed by unexpected action scenes ,which attracted out audience as the storyline in our
trailer was not in chronological order therefore it did not have a structured storyline. The first disturbance at the beginning set Sydney for the chain of
events that were coming up within our narrative which makes you question her 'perception'.
The Storyboards
The storyboard planning helped us plan out appropriate shots for our trailer and that would enhance the footage in our narrative. However during our
filming we were able to don freelance filming and try a variety of shots that we had not drawn or noted down, which brought a lot of the creativity aspect
into our trailer, which made our trailer stand out with our audience. There is evidence of this within our rough cuts. We also listened to each others ideas
and included them within all our footage even if they were acting within the scene. We also altered some of the planned shots . We also decided to take
some shot ideas completely due to our time frame or any other circumstances.

Theories and storyboards

  • 1. Dip To Black: We used a dip to black transition after the jump scare scene, to restore the equilibrium that was disturbed, also to set the major change in the scenes and mark the start of the storyline. The soft transition sets anticipation to the progression of the storyline.
  • 2. Cross Fade: We used a cross fade transition to end this scene into the first transition title. This transition blended the two scenes together with the quote “The ones you love”. This links the two together as Sydney’s mother is next to her in the scene also known as the one you love. This transition also adds to the progression of the storyline and introduces the first title transition.
  • 3. Vigorous Flicker: We used this flicker transition for this jump scare, to add to the intensity of the scene . This transition increases the scare factor within our target audience , as it is a jump scare it would be sudden. This also adds to shake within the actual footage and creates more reality and scare into the scene.
  • 4. Propp’s Character Theory Our storyline does not include all of the type of characters displayed in his theory, but it does outline some of the basic characters. For example “The Helper”- Warning Sydney- “Don’t Trust her I’ve heard bad things about her”. This establishes Holly’s role as the helper, as she warns Sydney about Mrs Chapel which is in fact the villain in the narrative . Sydney’s roles is also established as the hero as the storyline progresses in her struggle ,and at the end of the trailer she seems to have successfully escaped and made it to the end. The Psychiatrist “Mrs Willow” At the beginning she is seen as helping Sydney and suddenly that is completely subverted when she tells her “ They tell me not to trust anyone, people like you” . Further on in the trailer you also see her demon form which matches the suspicion raised by Sydney earlier within the trailer. Clover’s Final Girl Theory This links strongly with clover’s final girl theory as she seems to survive everything from the beginning to the end. Especially as she has quite an innocent character, this is the main reason we made her wear a white top, her innocence is determined from the beginning.
  • 5. Mulvey’s Male Gaze The age group we chose was 15 and older as that was the audience that was available to us. We also used this as our focus group to carry out our research . Even though our narrative did not highlight a particular theory in great depth, there was the use of mulveys male gaze and voyeurism. Mrs. willow is wearing a low V neck top throughout our narrative usually within a mid close up and Mrs chapel in a tight pencil skirt and blouse and heels usually in a tracking shot or mid shot. Subliminally these characters are being sexualised as they are also not wearing the colours related to innocence instead dark colours, the camera shots and editing also enhance this fact. The male gaze also diverts the fact that these two characters are actually the villains in the narrative completely diverting the opinion of our audience as the narrative progresses.
  • 6. Levi-Strauss Binary Opposition Binary opposition was a key theory within our narrative, especially the scenes we had enhanced the dark and dull lighting to intensify the actions within the scene or a warm tone or bright lighting to enhance the equilibrium. This style was used within the first scene in the trailer as the warm toned and "homely" atmosphere along with the chilled soundtrack set the equilibrium which was immediately disturbed with the actions. This completely subverted the theory as the scene usually foreshadows the events. The view of perception, who Sydney believes is the villain however there is more than one. The fact of reality, is Sydney seeing the reality or are this events just within her brain.
  • 7. Todorov’s Narrative Theory We followed todorov's narrative theory within out trailer as we felt it was the most relative theory to our storyline. A lot of camera shots and scenes created a sense of equilibrium and then it was suddenly disturbed by unexpected action scenes ,which attracted out audience as the storyline in our trailer was not in chronological order therefore it did not have a structured storyline. The first disturbance at the beginning set Sydney for the chain of events that were coming up within our narrative which makes you question her 'perception'. The Storyboards The storyboard planning helped us plan out appropriate shots for our trailer and that would enhance the footage in our narrative. However during our filming we were able to don freelance filming and try a variety of shots that we had not drawn or noted down, which brought a lot of the creativity aspect into our trailer, which made our trailer stand out with our audience. There is evidence of this within our rough cuts. We also listened to each others ideas and included them within all our footage even if they were acting within the scene. We also altered some of the planned shots . We also decided to take some shot ideas completely due to our time frame or any other circumstances.
