Essential oils are volatile liquid compounds extracted from natural plants. Essential oils offer healing and purifying
benefits and are also used with organic solvents for further use. These oils are used for various applications such
as in manufacturing soaps, perfumes, skincare products, food products, along with being used in aromatherapy
and for medicinal purposes. Of around 100 types of essential oils available throughout the world, Orange essential
oils, Peppermint essential oils, Citronella essential oils, Lemon essential oils, Eucalyptus essential oils, Lavender
essential oils, Sandalwood essential oils, etc., are few of the majorly used essential oils, globally.
Distillation and Expression are the two main processes used for the extraction of essential oils.
Essential Oils
Distillation: It is the most common way of extracting essential oils from plants. In this process, plants are
placed upon the grip and are then subjected to steam, at temperatures lower than boiling point, to remove
volatile constituents. It is then that the constituents are again cooled in the condenser, to covert it back it into
liquid form, which can be mixed with organic solvents, for further use.
Expression: Also known as cold pressing, Expression, is the oldest way of extracting essential oils from plants
and is mostly used to extract citrus essential oils from sources such as tangerine, lemon, bergamot, sweet
orange, and lime, with the help of sponge. In this process, plants are moisturized under the warm water to
break down the essential oils constituents. Once the sponge is filled with the constituents, it is then pressed to
obtain the essential oils.

and other stakeholders, depending on the usage of various products. Manufacturers and suppliers were asked
about average selling prices of various types of essential oils of their respective companies.
Final average selling prices of essential oils was deduced by taking weighted average, which was calculated by

Essential oils offer healing and purifying benefits and are also used with organic solvents for further use. These oils are used for various applications such as in manufacturing soaps, perfumes, skincare products, food products, along with being used in aromatherapy and for medicinal purposes. Distillation and Expression are the two main processes used for the extraction of essential oils. Essential Oils Distillation: It is the most common way of extracting essential oils from plants. In this process, plants are placed upon the grip and are then subjected to steam, at temperatures lower than boiling point, to remove volatile constituents. It is then that the constituents are again cooled in the condenser, to covert it back it into liquid form, which can be mixed with organic solvents, for further use. Expression: Also known as cold pressing, Expression, is the oldest way of extracting essential oils from plants and is mostly used to extract citrus essential oils from sources such as tangerine, lemon, bergamot, sweet orange, and lime, with the help of sponge. In this process, plants are moisturized under the warm water to break down the essential oils constituents. Once the sponge is filled with the constituents, it is then pressed to obtain the essential oils.
