This presentation will provide an overview of current topics in digital scholarship and scholarly communications and draw connections between these new areas and the traditional skill sets of acquisitions and electronic resources employees. Commonalities between the skills outlined in the Core Competencies for Electronic Resources Librarians and those needed for success in digital scholarship and scholarly communications will form the basis of the presenter's recommendations for staff involvement in digital scholarship and scholarly communications. An inventory of skills and talents among acquisitions staff will provide insight into the best ways to leverage existing human resources for the expansion of acquisitions duties into digital scholarship and scholarly communications. The presenter will outline new opportunities for acquisitions staff based on external research and internal staffing practice at the University of Montana. Research computing is in an exciting era and has never as fast evolved as in the last 20 years. We can nowadays answer research questions that we could not even ask two decades ago. This has led to discoveries such as the analyses of DNA from Next-Generation Sequencing technologies. The increased complexity of software, data, hardware and lab instruments demands for more openness and sharing of data and methods. Researchers and educators are not necessarily IT specialists though. Thus, a further trend in research computing is the shift from system-centric design to user-centric design and interdisciplinary teams – complex solutions are offered in self-explanatory user interfaces, so-called science gateways or virtual research environments. I will present solutions and projects supporting users to be able to focus on their research questions without the need to become acquainted with the nitty-gritty details of the complex research computing infrastructure. Key aspects of the presented projects are usability and interoperability of computational methods, reproducibility of research results as well as sustainability of research software. Sustainability of research software has many facets. I advocate for improving the diversity in workforce development, career paths for research software engineers and for incentivizing their work via means beyond the traditional academic rewarding system.

OBJECTIVES: Translational research focuses on the bench-to-bedside information transfer process — getting the information from researchers into the hands of clinical decision makers. At the same time, researchers who manage international research collaborations could benefit from increased knowledge and awareness of online collaboration tools to support these projects. Our goal was to support both needs through building awareness and skills with online and social media. METHODS: The Library developed a curricula targeted specifically to academic researchers focusing on collaboration technologies and online tools to support the research process. The curricula will provide instruction at three levels: gateway, bridge, and mastery tools. The goal of Level One is to persuade researchers of the utility of online social tools. To develop the program, input was solicited from researchers identified as leaders in this area as well as focus groups of students to discover which tools are already being used. RESULTS: Training is being provided on those tools identified as most likely to engage researchers (Google Docs, Skype, online scheduling, Adobe Connect, citation sharing tools). The curricula is being delivered as workshops duplicated as podcasts and in other online media. CONCLUSIONS: Online and social media are practical tools for supporting distance collaborations relatively inexpensively while offering the added benefit of placing selected information in online spaces that facilitate discovery and discussion with clinical care providers, thus supporting the fundamental research processes at the same time as promoting bench-to-bedside information transfer.

This presentation will dive into the ongoing challenges that academic libraries often face when improving the user experiences of out-of-the-box and open source repositories. Fueling the challenges are the ambiguity and fast-changing nature within the field of digital scholarship and the constant flux of technology platforms and tools. Fortunately, many libraries are paying more attention to users’ motivations and responding by designing user interfaces that support particular formats and contexts. We’ll explore emerging opportunities with repositories in looking at how far libraries should go in providing customizations to balance stakeholder and user needs, and how to plan for users’ ever-shifting expectations. This presentation was part of a NISO and NASIG webinar, "Library As Publisher, Part Two: UX and UI for the Library's Digital Collections" and was presented on March 14, 2018.

Touted for its "Web 2.0" functions, attractive interface, and ease of use for librarians, Libguides has transformed the way many libraries build web-based research guides. Cornell and Princeton Universities decided to collaborate on an assessment initiative to discover how these guides are valued on each campus. This study goes beyond the "2.0" dogma to empirically determine if LibGuides lives up to its publicity.
