The arch is the tallest arch in
the world, and the tallest
manmade structure in
America!
It is exactly as tall as it is
wide: 630 ft (192 meters).
6. GATEWAY TO THE WEST
• The gate was built to
celebrate The
Louisiana Purchase.
• A design competition was
held in 1947 to determine
who would win the prize. The
winner, with his idea of a
stainless-steel arch, was
Eero Saarinen from
Finland.
• The arch was built from
1963-1965.
7. WHAT IS IT MADE OF?
The inside is made of steel and concrete.
The outside is made of 142stainless-steel panels
8. HOW MUCH DID IT COST?
Back then, it cost $13 million USD (13,000,000,000 won!),
Today, it would cost $190 million USD (190,000,000,000 won!)

9. Visitors can take a 4-minute tram ride to the top of the
hollow arch.
There are 8 cars on each side, with each car holding 5
people.
…Or, you can take the 1,076 stairs.
10. At the top of the arch, there are
16 windows on the west and 16
windows on the east side so you
can see as far as 30 miles (48
km)away!
