5. TED Talk by David Steindl-Rast
• There is something to know about everyone of you and that’s very central to your
concern. There is something that you know about everyone ,all of us want to be happy.
We have all in common that we want to be happy.
• How is the connection between happiness and gratefulness ? Is it really the happy
people who are grateful ?
There are many people in the world who have everything to make them happy, but
they are not happy. Because they are not grateful. We all know people who have lots of
misfortune but they become happy being grateful. So it is not happiness that makes us
grateful. It’s gratefulness that make us happy.
6. • What do we really mean by gratefulness and how does it work?
We all know from experience how it goes. We experience something that valuable
to us and it’s really given . This two thing have to come together , it has to be
something valuable and it’s a real gift. We haven’t bought or earned it. It just given
when this two thing come together that is really valuable than gratefulness
spontaneously rises in your heart also happiness spontaneously rises. That’s how
gratefulness happens.
• Grateful living :
Every moment is a given moment as we say, it’s a gift the most valuable thing that
can ever be given to us. This moment all the opportunity that it contain. Every
moment is new gift. It comes over and over again. If you miss a opportunity then
another moment give you another opportunity. We can avail ourselves of this
opportunity or we can miss it. If we do it, it is the key of happiness. Moment by
moment we can be grateful for this gift.
7. • “We cannot be grateful for everything ” he says. Certainly not for war or for
oppression or for exploitation. Or on a personal level, the loss of a friend. But even
when we are confronted with something that is difficult, we can rise to the
occasion and respond to the opportunity that is given to us.
• Once in a while something very difficult to us. When this happens then it’s a
challenge to rise to that opportunity. We can rise to it by learning something
painful. To learn , to suffer , to stand up and those we fail get another opportunity
that is given in every moment.
• Method for living gratefully:
Stop Look Go
8. Inspiration
• To stay in present moment :
Present moments always gives us opportunity when we go back to our past that’s
always make us desperate . It makes our real life activity slower. That’s why we cannot
take the opportunity .
• To be grateful :
Now I’m aware how important thing to being grateful and how this can change our
life. When I am grateful, I am not fearful. When I am not fearful, then I am not
violent. This can make me happy .If I am grateful I can enjoy the moment , the
difference between the people.
• To become joyful : Gratefulness make us joyful. More and more joyful people make a
joyful world. That joyful world has more and more happy people.
