Chapter One: Converging Cultures
Section 2 and 3: Native American
                Cultures and African Cultures

A. The Iroquois League
• The Iroquois were several
     Native American tribes living
    in the Northeastern United States.
• These groups often fought with each
     other.
In the 1500’s, five of these groups joined
together and formed the Iroquois League, or
Iroquois Confederation.

WHAT IS A CONFEDERATION?

These groups had an alliance with
each other to prevent war.
Each tribe kept its independence.
They had a constitution that set up how the
Confederacy would work.

WHAT IS A CONSTITUTION AND WHY IS
IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE?
IROQUOIS LEAGUE
Why was the Iroquois League so important
to our understanding of earliest American
History?
CHUNK #2

 Turn to page 30 – 31 in your textbook.

 Read along with me while I read to you
    from the section labeled “Slavery”

How did slavery begin in Africa and
who was involved in the slave
 trade?
B. Slavery and the Slave Trade

 Slavery and the trading of slaves had
been part of African society for hundreds
of years.
Slaves were traded between
different tribal groups.
The European involvement in
the slave trade began to
spread in the 1400’s.
The Portuguese began to trade European goods
for gold and slaves with the Africans.

What do you think were some of the
European goods?

Why did the Europeans need slaves?
Some of the slaves worked on Portuguese sugar
plantations. As Europeans began demanding more
sugar, the need for slaves increased.

When Europeans began establishing colonies in
the Americas, the demand for slaves to work
Caribbean sugar plantations increased even more.
REVIEW
1. Why was the Iroquois League formed?

2. How many tribes made up the Iroquois
     League?

3. What country was the first to start dealing
     in the slave trade?

4. Why did the demand for
     slaves increase?
