A. The Iroquois League
• The Iroquois were several
Native American tribes living
in the Northeastern United States.
• These groups often fought with each
other.
4. In the 1500’s, five of these groups joined
together and formed the Iroquois League, or
Iroquois Confederation.
WHAT IS A CONFEDERATION?
These groups had an alliance with
each other to prevent war.
Each tribe kept its independence.
They had a constitution that set up how the
Confederacy would work.

How did slavery begin in Africa and
who was involved in the slave
trade?

Slavery and the trading of slaves had
been part of African society for hundreds
of years.
Slaves were traded between
different tribal groups.
The European involvement in
the slave trade began to
spread in the 1400’s.
8. The Portuguese began to trade European goods
for gold and slaves with the Africans.
What do you think were some of the
European goods?
Why did the Europeans need slaves?
Some of the slaves worked on Portuguese sugar
plantations. As Europeans began demanding more
sugar, the need for slaves increased.
When Europeans began establishing colonies in
the Americas, the demand for slaves to work
Caribbean sugar plantations increased even more.
