CAUSE AND EFFECTS OF COIVID-19
PANDEMIC
• Prepared by:
NURUL AINA BINTI MOHDYUSOF
TESL 2
PPISMP JUNE 2019
TASK 3 ORAL PRESENTATION
• The virus, Covid-19, first alertedWuhan, China of its negative effect and now are fast intruding
countries across the globes.
• In mass media, ways to overcome flu and virus proper way to cough and sneeze, wash hands and
symptoms of the patient infected by Covid-19 are being shared.
• On a larger scale, countries are taking travel sanction as one of the way to prevent the virus from
spreading wide across the globe.
• Therefore, it is agreeable that the restriction of movement, panic buying of groceries and daily
essentials and the sudden increase of face masks and health necessities price are the
consequences of Covid-19 pandemic.
• The first effect of Covid-19 pandemic is government has imposed a nationwide restriction of
movement.
• To break the chain of infection
• For example, in Malaysia, restriction of movement will occur in long period of time, starting
from 18th
of March until 14th
of April.
• The objective of this restriction being imposed is to flatten the outbreak curve.
• Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 and Police Act 1967 (Ministry of Human
Resources Malaysia, 2020).
• Banning of all mass gatherings, banning all Malaysian from travelling abroad, restriction on
foreigners to enter Malaysia, shutting down all primary, secondary and tertiary education
institutions and shutting down all of government and private premises excluding those
providing essentials services (Hazlin Hassan, 2020).
• Next, due to the infectious outbreak, people are panic buying for groceries and daily essentials.
• For example: Malaysians are panic buying for ‘pandemic pantries’ such as toilet papers, instant food,
microwavable food and other daily necessities (Lufkin, 2020).
• Singapore: mass demand for rice and instant noodles increases tremendously. Prime Minister of
Singapore to assure the public there was enough supply for the everyone (Lufkin, 2020).
• In addition, another similar situation also occurs in Auckland, New Zealand, where supermarket
spending increases up to 40% on the average
• This situation of panic buying of items such as toilet paper and instant food gives people a
sense of control (Yap & Chen, 2020).
• It allows them power to feel that they are safe and have enough stock to live with until
the restriction is over, despite not necessarily required to hoard on food and daily supplies.
• Hence, this shows how severe the consequences of Covid-19 pandemic to countries across
the globe.
• Lastly, face masks and hand sanitisers price hiking up is one of the inevitable negative
consequences of the pandemic.
• Done by irresponsible and greedy scalpers who would hoard buying those two items until the
stock become scarce and limited.
• Similar situation where masks price hiking up also happens in Indonesia (Willy Kurniawan, 2020).
• Thailand: face masks are being recycle due to the shortage (Smith, 2020).
• Malaysia: DomesticTrade, Cooperative and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK) in Malaysia, is
monitoring the illegal activity closely (Azura Abas, 2020) to prevent the exploitation of basic
necessities during the pandemic.
• Hence due to this consequence, it is clearly shown that despite nations are dealing with hard
times, there will still be some irresponsible people taking advantage of such situation.
• In conclusion, the consequences of pandemic are inevitable
• Perhaps, the consequences of Covid-19 which are restriction of movement, panic buying of
groceries and daily essentials and the sudden increase of face masks and health necessities price
could serve as a reminder to future generation of how difficult situation like this could lead to
several panic-driven phenomenon.
• responsibility to curb such pandemic falls on every individual.
• Play their role to flatten the pandemic curve in order for the pandemic to ease down and slowly
come to a stop.
