2. What is a Network?
A network consist of two or more computers
that are linked in order to share resources,
exchange files or allow electronic
communication
Types of network:
1. Local Area Network
2. Wide Area network
3. Metropolitan Area Network
3. Local Area Network
LAN is a computer network used for local
communication. It is confined to a relatively small
area. They are privately owned network. In a
typical LAN configuration , one computer is
designated as the file server . It stores all the
software's that controls the network as well as the
software that can be shared by the computers
attached to the network.
4. Computers connected to the file server are called
workstations. The workstations can be less
powerful than the file server , and they may have
additional software on their hard drives. On most
LANs, cables are used to connect the network
interface cards in each computer.
5. Wide Area Network
WAN is a computer that connects computers over
long distance like districts, states, countries,
continents or worldwide.WAN uses public, leased,
or private communication links to spread over long
distances.WAN uses telephone lines, satellite links
and radio link to connect.
6. The need to be able to connect any number of
computers at any number of sites, results in WAN
technologies to be different from the LAN
technologies. WAN network must be able to grow
itself. Internet is a common example of WAN
7. Differences between LAN and WAN
1.Coverage
2.Ownership
3.Data transmission rate
4.Data transmission errors
5.Data communication cost
