• Why:
• Framing Matters: Energy Transition (Solution Space) vs Carbon Math (The Problem)
• Learning by Doing And Learning by Sharing at an accelerated pace and
scale…North America as a model and globally replicated
• Outcome focused‐ declare common goals, define policies and actions to achieve
them and allocate joint resources (people, $, knowledge, technologies and IP)
• Acceleration‐ advocacy is easy…architecting and implementing energy system
transition is hard
• North Americas economy and its energy systems are integrated…climate change
does not honor provincial, state, regional or national boundaries
• Risk of unintended consequences ie displacements of emissions vs reductions

• Canadian Energy Strategy in a North American and global context
• Carbon Competitiveness is a requirement of the 21st century
•De‐carbonization of processes, products
•Resilience required in both adaptation and mitigation
• Systems change is complex…requires convening at different scales

• Collaboration: Joint effort to Achieve Common Goals
• Acceleration is critically important…climate change is urgent and energy transition
requires new technologies and innovation
• Building and leveraging capacity and resourcing….drives collaboration
• Peleton Model: Competitive and Collaborative dynamic
• Common goal is to accelerate progress (get to finish line in the least possible
timeframe….through effective use of each riders energy budgets and shared ambition)
• 30% net energy benefit from peloton collaboration vs riding independently
• Trust is high…free riders not tolerated…need equitable contribution of all teams and riders
• COSIA‐ 13 global to large energy firms have developed rules of how to ride in the peloton
• 1.3B$ in IP shared…240 Projects…65 new projects in 2015…40 associate members

6. Summary
• Ultimately we should aspire to having energy market and carbon price
linkages – need to create market push/pull for new technologies
• However, in parallel, initiate and execute joint actions that lead to
important outcomes
• Encourage, incubate and support aligned ambition wherever it emerges from
• Learning by Doing and Learning by Sharing….is a powerful declaration and a
quick win
• Try new models for collaboration vs cooperation
• Define Success as achieving goals and outcomes…but at an accelerated
pace and bold scale.
• Can't afford "tin cup" efforts
