- About DST DST Group is the Australian Government’s lead agency charged with applying science and technology to protect and defend Australia and its national interests. It delivers expert, impartial advice and innovative solutions for Defence and other elements of national security. Headed by the Chief Defence Scientist, we have an annual budget of approximately $408 million and employ approximately 2300 staff, predominantly scientists, engineers, IT specialists and technicians. We have three corporate divisions and seven research divisions. Our national headquarters is in Canberra, and we have research facilities in Melbourne, Edinburgh, Canberra, Brisbane, Sydney, HMAS Stirling at Rockingham (near Perth), Scottsdale in Tasmania, and Innisfail in northern Queensland. Research Information Services (RIS) is a directorate in Information Management and Technology (IM&T) within the Research Services Division. It provides specialised information support and information management services to meet the research requirements of Defence Science and Technology Group (DST Group). The central premise for RIS’s strategic future is the transformation of our services built around value creation; our contribution to organisational impact; and providing benefits and outcomes for DST Group. In charting a successful course, RIS embraces the professional challenges presented by the changing nature of research; is aware of the importance of a stronger role in the collaborative research culture; and recognises the need to adopt innovative and technologically driven approaches to the provision of information services. The embedded model DST Research Librarians: Are tightly integrated into the conduct of DST Group research working in close partnership with scientists in support of delivering valued scientific advice and innovative solutions for Defence and national security. Are actively involved in the day-to-day life of their S&T Division; attending group meetings, engaging with researchers and other staff in their home environments, and proactively providing tailored just-in-time services. Have comprehensive knowledge of the research programs and scientific domains of their Science and Technology (S&T) Division Provide general research librarian services such as information skills training, assisting with literature reviews, and assessing and reviewing information resources and tools, AND specialist services in research business intelligence, benchmarking, research data management, research impact, and advice and support in e-research tools.
