This document discusses urban planning and development. It begins by defining urban planning and its primary functions, which include dealing with land usage in urban, suburban, and rural areas and prioritizing public welfare. It then outlines some of the key aspects of urban planning like zoning, infrastructure development, and population analysis. The document also provides a brief history of urban planning in ancient civilizations and describes the main zones within cities, including residential, industrial, commercial, recreational, and agricultural areas. It discusses the importance of zoning and some challenges in modern urban planning like growing populations and environmental issues.
2. Introduction
• It is a branch of architecture, which deals with
the different type of lands and their usage.
• Urban planning deals with the urban,
suburban and rural areas.
• Urban planning’s primary function is public
welfare.
• Urban planning is very important for the city
to growth.
3. • It helps a city to grow in a particular order or
way.
• Without urban planning a city will develop
itself but not in a way that it could develop.
• Whenever there is a new city or area to be
built in future, hand of urban planners is
always there.
• Urban planning includes activities such as:
zoning, population, geographic mapping and
analysis, water supply system, transportation
network.
4. Urban development in ancient days
• In ancient day cities and villages were developed
at the side of a river like: moenjo daro, Harapa
civilization and Mesopotamia civilization etc.
• Wherever the water was present people used to
live over that area.
• In ancient days it was way more difficult to bring
water to their houses and other buildings.
• But now its way more easy to bring water to our
buildings via different pipelines and mechanism.
5. • And in old days as cities were built near water
ways so it was easier for people to travel
through the boat rather to travel through
land.
• But things has its both positive and negative
aspect:
• One of the biggest negative aspect of the life
near water was the fear of flood.
• And the positive aspect is that there is mostly
a fertile land for farming purpose.
6. There are mainly 5 zones which are found in a
city are:-
1. Residential zone
2. Industrial zone
3. Recreational zone
4. Commercial zone
5. Agricultural zone
Zones in a city
7. Residential zone
• The area which is allotted for residential
purpose.
• The area has houses in it.
• Houses may have different type according to
its size.
• Houses may inlcudes: single storey houses,
double storey houses or multi-storey
building(apartments).
• In this area there is little rush on the roads
because mostly everyone stay in their houses.
8. Industrial zone
• This area is allotted for the industries,
factories and workshops.
• Mostly these area are away fom residential
area.
• Because in these areas there may be noise
pollution and smoke pollution
• Industrial area may have any kind of industry
it also can be a power grid station.
• This is the economy boosting area of a city.
9. Recreational zone
• The area allotted for some parks and
playground is called a recreational area.
• Parks could be either small parks or
entertainment parks or amusement parks.
• Recreational area is important for the city
because it provides a fresh and green
environment to the city.
• Even in out houses there are some small
recreational areas like gardens, balconies and
courtyard, swimming pool etc.
10. Commercial area
• This is another economy boosting area foe the
city.
• In commercial areas there are offices, shops,
restaurants, hotels, banks, petrol stations,
pharmacy, movie theater, chain store etc.
• Market areas are also included in this zone.
• Commercial areas are easy to find in the city.
• They are always on the easy approach for people.
• Commercial areas are the business hubs.
• Shopping malls and shopping centers are also
included in this zone.
11. Agricultural zone
• This zone is partially for agricultural land and
farms.
• This area could be used foe residential
purpose but for farmers and workers ho works
in the farms.
• This area is mostly at the bank of rivers or
canals because it is easy to move water from
the river to the agricultural land.
• As for as which crops, plants, fruits and
vegetables are being produced in the farms it
completely depends on the type of land.
12. Why Zoning is important
Zoning is important because:-
• Less disruption in the areas.
• One zone does not effect the other zone.
• Zoning prevent one zone to mix with the other
zone.
• There is always a particular zone for a
particular work.
13. Problems in urban planning
• Growing population.
• Slum areas
• Water distribution issue.
• Electricity distribution issue.
• no affordable houses
• Quality education problem.
• Not using zones according to its usage.
• Environment pollution.
• Quality health services problem.
14. Solution for urban planning
• Every building must have a green room. It may be
consist of gardens, solar panels, white colored
roofs or farming on the rooms.
• Material used in the buildings must be reusable
and recyclable.
• Every building either residential, industrial,
commercial should follow certain rules of
sustainability.
• Less usage of those vehicles those runs on petrol
or gas. There must be more electrical vehicles.
