same.

13. History of organization :
Banwasi Vikas Ashram is a grass-root voluntary organization working in Giridih district of Jharkhand to improve the
livelihood of vulnerable sections of the society, through their organization, capacity building, education and participatory
action.
The founders were inspired by the Sampurna kranti movement and its applicability as a tool of social transformation. A team
of young social activists founded the organization in 1990 for overall development of marginalized communities in Giridih
district and adjoining areas of Jharkhand.
Banwasi activities started with Chatra land movement, where the founders of BVA and their associates mobilized Mushhar
community for their land-rights, declaring their entitlements leading to their final emancipation from Jamindars. The control
of the tillers of the land over their land caused much unrest in the area, but it also helped to set off the increased influence of
nuxal movement with peaceful agitations. At that time there was a wide gap in terms of quality and access to education that
motivated Banwasi to work on education in the areas with miserably poor literacy and education.
14. Guiding principle :
Banwasi approach is to develop self help approach among the disadvantaged community in a lifecycle approach, starting with
their immediate concerns and developing the inbuilt system to empower local community for taking up development
initiatives by themselves

  • 3. 13. History of organization : Banwasi Vikas Ashram is a grass-root voluntary organization working in Giridih district of Jharkhand to improve the livelihood of vulnerable sections of the society, through their organization, capacity building, education and participatory action. The founders were inspired by the Sampurna kranti movement and its applicability as a tool of social transformation. A team of young social activists founded the organization in 1990 for overall development of marginalized communities in Giridih district and adjoining areas of Jharkhand. Banwasi activities started with Chatra land movement, where the founders of BVA and their associates mobilized Mushhar community for their land-rights, declaring their entitlements leading to their final emancipation from Jamindars. The control of the tillers of the land over their land caused much unrest in the area, but it also helped to set off the increased influence of nuxal movement with peaceful agitations. At that time there was a wide gap in terms of quality and access to education that motivated Banwasi to work on education in the areas with miserably poor literacy and education. 14. Guiding principle : Banwasi approach is to develop self help approach among the disadvantaged community in a lifecycle approach, starting with their immediate concerns and developing the inbuilt system to empower local community for taking up development initiatives by themselves 15. So far it has made direct interventions with more than 6000 children for their meaningful education and mainstreaming to formal education. Banwasi Vikas Ashram has been closely associated with following educational intervention programmes to strengthen the education mainstream – Janshala Programme (A UN- GOI intervention for primary schooling) Under the UN-Govt. of India programme ‘Janshala,’ BVA has significantly contributed to community mobilization, capacity building of teachers with joyful learning methods, pedagogy, evaluation methods and girl-schooling. In this programme, BVA has jointly worked with the state education mechanism and involved itself with micro-planning process in 300 village panchayats in 03 districts of Bihar and 01 district of Jharkhand. BVA facilitated the capacity building exercise and also the development of a 20-day micro-planning module, which has now been adopted by Jharkhand Education Project Council, Ranchi in the same form for its interventions in other areas.
