4. INTRODUCTION
• Chandrapura thermal power station is located at Bokaro
district in the state of jharkhand. It has an installed
capacity of 2790 MW. CTPS had the pride of being
largest pulverised fuel fire power station of asia with
highest steam parameters. Electrical switchyard of CTPS
is a pride of DVC, being India’s biggest network.

8. Transformer
•Generating transformers : Used in power plant for
stepping up the voltage for transmitting the power to the
grid. Electrical power is generated in the power plant at
lower voltages. In order to transmit the power to long
distances voltage has to step up to reduce the losses.
(400 kV, 200 kV, 110 kV, 66 kV, 33kV,22kW)

10. SWITCH YARD
• A switching switchyard is a substation that operates only at a single voltage level. Switchyards are
mainly essential for transmission, distribution, collection, and controlling the flow of electricity.
The switchyard delivers power generated at the power plant to the electrical grid.

2. Circuit breaker
3. Current transformer
4. Potential transformer
5. Wave trap
6. Lightning arrestors
13. • Isolator is a manually operated mechanical switch
which separates a part of the electrical power
system normally at off load condition.
Types and categories of Isolators :
1. Depending upon system requirement
a. Double Breaker Isolator
b. Single Breaker Isolator
c. Pantograph type Isolator
2. Depending upon position in power system
a. Bus Side Isolator
b. Line Side Isolator
c. Transfer Bus Side Isolator
ISOLATOR
14. Circuit Breaker
• Electrical Circuit Breaker is a switching device which can be operated manually as well as
automatically for controlling and protection of electrical power system respectively.
15. Types of Circuit Breaker :
• According different criteria there are different types of Circuit Breaker
• According to their arc quenching media the circuit breaker can be divided as
1) Oil Circuit Breaker
2) Air Circuit Breaker
3) SF6 Circuit Breaker
4) Vacuum Circuit Breaker
• According to their services the circuit breaker can be divided as
1) Outdoor Circuit Breaker
2) Indoor Circuit Breaker
• According to the operating mechanism of circuit breaker they can be divided
as
1) Spring operated Circuit Breaker
2) Pneumatic Circuit Breaker
3) Hydraulic Circuit Breaker
• According to the voltage level of installation types of circuit breaker are
referred as
1) High Voltage Circuit Breaker
2) Medium Voltage Circuit Breaker
3) Low Voltage Circuit Breaker
16. Current Transformer
• A CT is an instrument
transformer in which the
secondary current is
substaintially proportional
to primary current and
differs in phase from it by
ideally zero degree. It is
used for measurement of
alternating electric
currents.
17. Potential Transformer
• Potential transformers are
electronic devices that are used to
measure current and voltage
circulating in electrical power
systems. They are designed to
control circuitry of high voltage by
making use of a highly accurate
transformation ratio between
magnitude and phase. Potential
transformer are also known as
voltage transformer.
• They have a large number of
primary and a few number of
secondary turns. It is used to
control the large value of voltage.
18. Wave Trap
• Wave Trap is used for communication purpose in
substations. Wave trap is also known as Line
trap.
Generally electric power waves has frequency of
50 Hz, so we send our communication waves
with high frequencies like 150khz, 200khz etc…
Wave Trap consists of filter circuit (
combination of capacitor and inductor) which is
used to allow only power frequency waves to
electrical equipment’s and stop the
communication wave into yard.
19. Lightning Arrestors
• A lightning arrestor is a device used on power system above 1KV to protect other
equipment from lightning and switching surges. It divert lightning surges to ground,
they are simple conducting terminals that are always at ground potential and are never
energized.
