HAIR CONDITIONER
• Hair conditioner is a hair care product use to improve feel, appearance and
manageability of hair. Its main function is to reduce friction between strands of
hair to allow smoother brushing or combing which might otherwise cause damage
to scalp.

QUALITY PARAMETERS OF HAIR
CONDITIONER
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF HAIR CONDITIONER:-
 VISCOSITY
 VISUAL APPEARANCE
 FRAGRANCE
 TEXTURE
 COLOR
QUALITY PARAMETERS OF HAIR
CONDITIONER contd.
DETERMINATION OF pH :-
• Weigh accurately 5±0.01 g conditioner in 100 ml beaker.
• Add 45 ml of water and disperse the conditioner in it.
• Determine the pH of suspension at 27℃ using the pH meter.
• It must be in range of 5.0 to 9.0 pH.
QUALITY PARAMETERS OF HAIR CONDITIONER
contd.
PERFORMANCE EVALUATION:-
THERMAL STABILITY :-
• Spread a 20 mm broad and 5 mm thick stripe from the material to be tested on the
internal wall of the beaker of 100 ml capacity in its total height.
• Keep the beaker for 8 hours in the humidity chamber at 60 to 70% relative
humidity and the temperature of 37 ± 1℃.
• It will pass the test when no oil separation observed.
QUALITY PARAMETERS OF HAIR
CONDITIONER contd.
TEST FOR RANCIDITY :-
REAGENTS –
• Concentrated Hydrochloric Acid
• Phloroglucinol solution
PROCEDURE :-
• Shake 10 ml of material, melted if necessary.
• With 10 ml of concentrated hydrochloric acid and 10 ml of phlorogluicnol solution.
• Shake for 1 minute.
It only passes test when no pink colour appear.
QUALITY PARAMETERS OF HAIR
CONDITIONER contd.
DETERMINATION OF TOTAL FATTY SUBSTANCE :-
PRINCIPLE :- The emulsion is broken up with dilute mineral acid and the fatty
matter is extracted with petroleum ether . It is weighed after removal of solvent.
REAGENTS :-
• Dilute hydrochloric acid – 1:1 (v/v)
• Ethyl ether
• Methyl orange indicator solution
• Sodium sulphate.
PROCEDURE :-
• 2 gram of material weighed accurately in a conical flask, add 25 ml of dilute HCl
QUALITY PARAMETERS OF HAIR
CONDITIONER contd.
fit a reflux condenser into a flask and boil the content until oil and water
phases separated.
• Pour the content of flask into a 300ml separating funnel and allow it to
cool to 20℃ .
• Rinse the conical flask with 50ml of ethyl ether in portions of 10ml.
Pour the ether rinsing into separating funnel.
• Shake the separating funnel well and leave until the layers separate.
Separate out the aqueous phase and shake it out with 50 ml portion of
ether twice.
• Combine all the ether extracts and wash them with water until free of
acid (when tested with methyl orange solution).
QUALITY PARAMETERS OF HAIR
CONDITIONER contd.
• Filter the ether extract with filter paper containing sodium sulphate into a conical
flask which has been previously dried at a temperature of 60 ±2℃ and then weighed.
• Wash the sodium sulphate on the filter with ether and dry the material remaining in
the flask at a temperature of 60 ± 2 ℃ to a constant mass.
CALCULATION :-
Total fatty substance, percent by mass = 100 × M1/M2
Where M1 = Mass in gram of residue,
M2 = Mass in gram of material taken for the test.
QUALITY PARAMETERS OF HAIR CONDITIONER
contd.
HAIR STRAND TESTING :-
• After washing a strand with shampoo, 1 gram of
conditioner sample was applied to it and hair was rinsed
and then dried.
• During application – spreadability and coating parameter
was evaluated.
• In wet hair, after rinsing – smoothness and detangling was
evaluated.
• In dry hair – detangling, combing, smoothness, shine,
volume and moisturizing was evaluated.
QUALITY PARAMETERS OF HAIR CONDITIONER
contd.
SENSORY EVALUATION :-
• It was performed by a trained panel and group of 15
consumers. It is performed through a survey, following
parameters are tested :-
• Anti-static effect (If 1- hair with static electricity, if 10
reduction of static electricity).
• Anti-frizz effect (If 1- frizzy hair, 10- reduction of frizzy
hair).
• Flexibility (If 1- hair with lack of flexibility, 10- flexible
hair).
• Manageability (If 1- hair with lack of manageability, 10-
hair with good manageability).
