what are the business benefits?

2. Serco Internal
• The Government ambition is to have the best Superfast
Broadband Network in Europe by 2016.
• Improved broadband (>2Mbps) to every business and
community across Devon & Somerset by 2016
• Faster broadband (>20Mbps) to at least 90% of the area by
2016
3. Serco Internal
BT Commercial Roll Out
• Commercial rollout is an investment £2.5 billion into superfast
broadband rollout across the UK.
• That equates to roughly: -
– 50,000km of fibre being laid
– Installation of 30,000 street cabinets
– By 2014 two thirds of UK premises (residential and business)
will have access to superfast broadband
– Researching new solutions too
5. Serco Internal
Why is this important?
Ofcom stats - November 2013
• Urban: 31.9Mbps
• Rural: 11.3Mbps (slowest register 0.6Mbps)
• 40% of people in UK have speeds under 5Mbps
6. Serco Internal
Connecting Devon and Somerset
• A ground breaking partnership encompassing 6 LA areas to
deliver improved and superfast broadband to rural areas
• Improved broadband (>2mbps) to every business and
community across Devon and Somerset by 2016
• Faster broadband (>20mbps) to at least 90% of the area by
2016
• Without this project 700,000 residents and 26,000 businesses,
with a combined turnover of £9 billion, have no certainty of
receiving improved or superfast broadband from a commercial
rollout

Roll out plans?
3 year programme – ending in December 2016
• Phased approach
• Planning first - headline details
• 3-6 month plan for the phased area
• Not all of the area will be covered in that phase

In the mean time…
• Think about
– Avoiding peak time use
– Extension cables to router – place router directly into the first
socket
– Check.. out of date router (get replacement free), cheap router,
web browser and hardware
– Check no-one is running background tasks (iradio, icloud syncing
etc)
– Clear your web browser’s cache
– Change Password on router
– Channel change on router
– Replace Micro filters & order a broadband accelerator
– Read the guide

Future with fibre
• 1Gbs broadband
• 2Gbs
• Japan, Korea and Chaganooga ...
• Future exa and zeta bps speeds and enormous bandwidth
26. Serco Internal
Upload speeds
• ADSL - 0.5Mbps
• ADSL 2 - 1Mbps
• Satellite – 1 – 6 Mbps
• Cosmic office download 10Mbps….. Upload 0.8Mbps
• Important to you? Tailor packages - offer upload speeds
10mbps
100Mb package are up to 30Mb or higher.
27. Serco Internal
Why do you need good upload speeds?
• Filesharing - A fast broadband upload speed will reduce the
time it takes to share files,
• Remote server connection - if you work from home using a
remote network, your work files will transfer quicker with good
upload speeds at your office. Guide to downloading for more
information
• Video conferencing and webinars – if you are hosting either,
then your upload speeds need to be really strong. Check them
before hosting.
• Social networking - If you use sites like Facebook, YouTube and
Twitpic to share photos and videos, you'll be familiar with the
long wait between finding the right photos and having them
appear on your profile, especially if you're uploading lots of
pictures at once. A fast broadband upload speed will improve
this dramatically.
28. Serco Internal
Data allowance
• Typically
• ADSL line 10GB monthly data allowance
• Fibre 40GB monthly data allowance
• 1 film downloaded = 1 GB
• 100 emails = 3MB (without attachments)
• 100 photos = 500 MB (roughly)
29. Serco Internal
Contention
• Contention ratio: is the maximum number of other people you
have to share the connection infrastructure with.
• So a contention ratio of 50:1 would mean that the maximum
number of people you could be sharing the connection with at
anytime is 49 other people.
• If all 50 people were downloading at the same time then your
download speed could drop hugely, in reality though this
doesn't happen and you can enjoy much faster download
speeds

Christine Mottram – Marketing

‘I’ve had my budget cut from
budget cut from £90,000 to £30,000.
This was such a huge drop, so I
eliminated what wasn’t working,
which was magazine ads, expensive
memberships.
I then looked at was working and
continued with the FREE things like
Facebook and twitter.
I use Facebook boosts which I pay
between £18 and £30 to get to
20,000 viewers, this has raised our
profile immensely.
This approach has saved me £10,000
this year.

• Cloud as a backup to PCs /server/data
• Levels of redundancy in place
• Security of data – not held locally on laptops
• Less reliance on local infrastructure and fire, floods, theft
56. Beverly Clarke – CARE – White

Working on spreadsheets, on one
computer and had to work in the
office.
A simple CRM system was the best
approach and Dad can update it
when he is with a client.
And cloud back up of systems in
