4. It is a journey of
exploring objects
within relations.
Along with having a longstanding curious, crafting relationship with
designs, the idea of ‘Open Relation Design’ arose from witness-
ing the unfortunate phenomena of today’s products ending up in a
landfill. This constant changing state of relative design and appre-
ciation of aesthetics, led me to the conception of an ideology, that
well designed products often emphasize the intangible relations
between users and products. ‘Open Relation Design’ is a holistic
idea I found that is designed to have a room for growth with users
accommodating with material, shape and emotional properties
with an ‘intended openness’ within.

6. LG Open Innovation
/ designing the future of LG’s home entertainment products
The goal of this project is to develop innovative/creative con-
cepts for LG’s Open Innovation on Home Entertainment products.
Through research, ideation, testing and documentation performed
by a multidisciplinary, we are expected to propose concepts
related to the area of home entertainment system, TV remote and
soundbar in this project.
a group project with Sae Joung Kou
In the group with Sea Joung, I mainly focused on generating
optimal forms and functions based on the problem we both re-
searched. After sketching out possible concepts, I explored them
through testing out with CAM (computer aided manufacturing) and
3D printing and such.

Silverphone
/ cell phone for the elderly
2012
a Finallist from-
a group project with
Elizabeth S. Schultz, Zane Coffic,
Jung Min Lee
In this group project, I initially contributed to bring a foundation con-
cept, the fragmented display-keypad, and later took the charge of
visualizing the form in which the round, turtle shaped cell phone de-
vice and the tablet came to life. I also suggested the color scheme
with silver on the outside and red inside as it was a popular color
style in the 50’s and the 60’s.
20. Mobile Life and Elders
Designing phones for the elderly presents many
challenges and is a well researched field. These
phones are highly simplistic and only do the most
basic cell phone tasks: calling and receiving phone
calls, entering contacts, and sometimes texting.
The issue with elderly cell phones now is that they
are not keeping up with the new technology. This is
the issue that our group is trying to fix in the most
simplistic and easily acceptable way.
The Personas
With their smart phone, their children would like
them to have daily medication reminders, internet
access to facebook, and a calendar. The problem is
that Elizabeth Stan do not want a new phone, they
already have a Jitterbug and they just got used to
it so they are reluctant to learn how to use a new
phone.
Elizabeth and Stan are an elderly couple whose chil-
dren are very enthusiastic about them getting a
smart phone.
Objectives and Constraints
In order to solve both Elizabeth and Stan’s unwilling-
ness for new technology and their children’s request
for them to get a smart phone, we are going to in-
corporate schedule and record keeping methods that
they already use into a user friendly phone.
We want to incorporate invisible technology. That
is we want there to be new smart phone technology
incorporated into our phone without the user being
aware. This will take away added confusion as well as
make the similar to the Jitterbug.
Elizabeth and Stan have problems with hearing, mo-
bility, and eyesight.
Design Objectives / CriteriaConstraints
1. Easy transition from device to device
2. Allow easy visibility and hearing
3. Hidden technology
4. Incorporate handwriting
5. Keeps track of scheduling without
having to type everything in them
6. Design that is aesthetically relatable
to them
1. Minimize computer interactions
2. Dexterity issues

Currently in the market, there are some cellphones specially de-
signed to target elderly people. Those phones, examples above,
are commonly designed to have enlarged buttons and texts for
easy to press and read, louder speaker, simple and straight for-
ward interface and functions for easy to operate.
Looking at contextual ideas of turtle, its iconic im-
age for elders in many cultures for those long lifes-
pan, slow and steady appearance, the shape of turtle
can be not only familiar but also it gives an extra
dimension and meaning to the product.
Since the majority of target users are baby-boomers,
who were the most active between 60’s and 70’s, it
also adopted design languages from that era such
as tear drop shaped form and red and silver colors.

The site had always been on my mind because not
only the place I always pass by to get classes but also
its interesting set. With noticing abandoned nails
on the wall, the tall tree standing in between the
exterior walls gave some weird feelings.

Minimizing environmen-
tal impact
Utilizing abandoned nails on the walls in order to
minimizing damage to the environment, stretchy
and flexible strings would be cut into appropriate
lengths and attached to the nails with bypassing the
tree in the middle.
From dots, lines,
spaces to times
In contrast with Western culture, Koreans have
always revered nature (as evidenced by their ar-
chitectural principles) while Western was about
making nature work for them. Inspired by
‘Dangsan Tree’, sacred trees that is believed to
have holy power in Korean culture, this instal-
lation art symbolizes the connection in between
nature and human by bypassing white elastic
cords from the walls around the tree.
The tree distorts the surface created by multiple
layers of cords by blocking the path of them. The
intention of this installation the man-made ob-
jects interact with nature-made.

46. White cotton yarn is characterized by its feather-
like lightness, softness and elastic. It is also a choice
for sustainable material since it is not synthetic so it
rapidly biodegradable. The color white was picked
because it would be the best color to create much
contrast against the scene.
It was great observing the installation inter-
acting with its surroundings. Falling leaves
caught by strings and insects, worms on those
were producing more relations to the installa-
tion. with the site.

From Dots, to Lines, to Surfaces, and to Spaces -
The facade is created by connecting nails on the walls facing each
other with white elastic strings and it encloses the tree in be-
tween; however, the surface of the facade is distorted, deformed,
and regenerated by the tree which is located in the passage of
the lines. Inspired by Korean culture that reveres nature (as evi-
denced by their architectural principles) while Western is about
making nature work for them, this facade changes its surface
according to the tree intentionally symbolizing coexistence of
human and nature in our daily life. The lines from the nails
changes its visibility according to the amount of sunlight, while
dramatically falling leaves are captured in the strings, becoming
additional elements to the installation.
