*load up the MMU homepage before you startGood afternoon everyoneMy name’s David Jenkins……and I’m the Subject Librarian for Secondary Education here at Didsbury LibraryToday we’re going to be looking at finding the full text material that you need for your research in 5 minutes…and how, I hear you ask, are we going to do this?
We are going to be using Library SearchSo the first question is…
What is Library SearchIt’s a new servicethat lets youeasily find all types of materials the library hasIt covers ejournals, print journals,ebooks, print books, newspaper, images – allsorts!Today we’re focusing on electronic resources that have the full text available online
Where is Library Search?It’s on the MMU Library WebsiteSo, from the main MMU Website……scroll to the bottom and click on the link to Library…and the Library Search box is right there in the middle of the page for youN.B. the Library Search box hasn’t actually been launched on the Library Website yet but explain this in an aside to delegates
To get started, simply enter a few wordsand hit the Search buttonkeywords areterms that captures the essence of a topic or assignmentWe’ll cover choosing the right keywords in greater depth later in your course but just to give you a quick idea…*Search for “e-learning assessment”
click on an item’s title to see the full text if it’s availableNot all results will have the full text availableThe yellow stars show what MMU has with full text online*Click on the first result:‘E-assessment for e-learning’by Sunil Prakash, Lakshmi and Saini, D. If you’ve not found the kind of results you want, then you can refine your searchYou can simply add more keywords* Search for “e-learning assessment classroom”Or you can add different keywordsWhen using Google people change keywords automatically if no results to their liking come up on 1st page until you find what you are after* Search for “e-learning evaluation classroom”There are options to refine on the left of the Library search pageThey are self explanatoryIf you only want ebooks, tick the ebooks boxIf you only want results relating to education, tick the education boxYou can also refine by date and so on
So, just to recap:Library Search lets you easily find all the types of materials you needYou can find it on the MMU Library WebsiteYou get started by entering keywords and hitting the Search buttonYou log in to access the full text, if you need toYou refine your search, expanding or contracting it as appropriate
